(The window to submit your questions has closed 🙁. But you can check out what your friends asked and they answers they got.)

By now everyone must have seen the orange clad motorbike riders cruising through the streets of Kampala or Nairobi. If you haven’t you will soon! With over 15,000 SafeBoda drivers across their cities of operation, the orange clad motorbike riders who can be hailed via their app are bringing safety and lots of other services, all with a smile, to East Africa.

Safeboda is one of the fastest growing tech companies in Africa having disrupted the “Boda Boda” industry through its model that emphasizes on safety and quality customer service. It is now thinking about more than just safe rides, building out its platform of other on-demand services such as parcel delivery, food and payments. Today on the app in Kampala, you can buy airtime, send a parcel and transfer your wallet balance from your SafeBoda app to your friends’ app.

For the next 3 days we are giving you the chance to ask any question(s) to 3 of the great minds behind this explosive service! Now these guys are super busy, getting a meeting with them is a challenge, even for us (and they’re our clients) but we are giving you the opportunity to effectively have a mini interview with them. So you can’t miss this one out. Okay, enough hype, who are we giving you the chance to ask questions to?

1. Co - Founder and Director, Ricky Rapa Thompson

It was through Ricky’s experience that the idea of Safeboda was born. Ricky’s career journey has been an epic one; from a security guard to a boda boda driver to co-founding the Safeboda app! His story is one from rags to riches that you can learn so much from.

2. Co - Founder and CEO, Alastair Sussock

By joining forces with Ricky and fellow co-founder Max, Alastair helped grow Kampala from just 5 drivers and more recently led the expansion beyond Kampala while spearheading capital raising - SafeBoda is now a company with 5 offices across 4 countries and has over 200 staff. A true innovator to learn from.

3. Kenya Country Head, John Ngari

John Ngari is the man taking Safeboda to new heights in Kenya! He has held leadership positions at the big names when it comes to Financial Services; Jumo, Standard Bank, Citi! Find out what it takes to work in such companies and to be involved in scaling them!

Leave your questions in the comment section below. Please state who your question is directed to by writing the person’s name first. For example, “Alistair: How did you come up with the idea of SafeBoda?”

The deadline to ask your questions is Thursday 31st October, 11:59 pm. We will publish Allistair, John and Ricky’s answers to your questions in a separate blog post next week so watch out for that too! We will also reward one randomly selected user with FREE Career Coaching and CV Review.

Get cracking with those questions and happy learning!!

    Rachel | October 31, 2019 17:22

John ngari: I've seen you previously held leadership positions in banks. I've always wanted to work in a bank,I apply but don't get selected, how do I go about it? How did you start the safe boda app? What role do you play?

    John | November 20, 2019 13:12

Hello Rachel, I think that for any job that you pursue, the first step is to assess your competencies and experience for the role. Conducting a candid assessment of the two aspects, and creating an inventory of those skills is key to identify perhaps where you may be falling short whenever you apply for a role. The inventory also shows you which gaps you have and perhaps which areas of your skill set that you need to focus more energy and resources on. Lastly, be aware of emerging trends in financial services - a banker's role 10 years ago is not the same as it is currently, so it is important that you identify emerging trends and nurture your skills and competencies along those changes. SafeBoda started with a small community of riders solving fundamental problems in Kampala, and later moved to Nairobi and Mombasa. My role is to drive growth in the Kenya business, amplifying our mission to empower entrepreneurs in a vibrant and ever growing SafeBoda ecosystem.

    jonathan | October 31, 2019 17:13

    1. Safe boda to a rider is income generating but to the client, its an expenditure line. I have a way to make it an income line to the client too so that its a win win situation to client, rider and safe boda as a company. To mr Tomson how do i achieve this? Is there an avenue I can follow to add something to the app that will benefit all parties involved?

    Stephen | October 31, 2019 15:43

Most definitely this becomes the most convenient mode of transport especially in traffic jam cities like Nairobi. I must confess how the industry has in several occasions aided my move to job in time and thus my job security. Equally important is the fact that motorbike industry has laid food on the table for my family for sometime now say 3 Years as a young entrepreneur dealing with motorbike spares. Kudos to the idea which I believe is full of sustainabilty.

    Galdinus | October 31, 2019 14:49

    Lencer Apiyo | October 31, 2019 14:47

    Angela | October 31, 2019 13:22

    JOHN | October 31, 2019 13:18

What made you start the project at that time? What things did you stood by them for you to make it in this industry? What is the simply step that one can take and be on the right track?

It goes to three of u , How did you do it guys ??

    Maureen | October 31, 2019 12:42

Hi Can one get employed outside Kenya?

    Grace | October 31, 2019 12:37

Does Safe Boda have current maps better than Google maps? If so how do you navigate the issue of unmapped areas in East Africa and the cumbersome back and forth, time-wasting nature that that is? Or does this run on the idea that the bodas are local and thus just know the area?

    Mercy Ocilia | October 31, 2019 12:37

Safe boda is only available in Kampala city but if you go to the remaining parts of Uganda like mbarara trust me you can not access my request is if you can, can you extend your services to the other parts of the country do it if possible because people are falling victims of those untrusted boda boda men. Thank you.

    Emmanuel | October 31, 2019 12:34

My question goes to all the 3 founders, creating a job means a lot in this world, i.e. you definitely must have CAPITAL to start it, many have the idea but they are limited by capital. So what advice will you give to such people? Thanks, may your effort reign long and forever. Emmanuel Atibo

    Hamba | October 31, 2019 12:28

Rafa, I would like to know how you transformed you idea as a boda boda rider to an app that can help fellow boda riders because I worked for company that lends fuel to boda boda riders but they failed to reap back their money and got interested in the idea and wanted to take it to another level. Need your advise!

    WILLIAM | October 31, 2019 12:27

Dear Mr Ngari. My name is William Kagwanja. I noticed the company is venturing into food delivery partnerships under Safeboda foods. This will require rigorous transportation, storage*, handling, maybe temperature control, tracking etc. I have great experience in last mile logistics, courier and distribution services and would be glad to offer my services in this lines. How is the company addressing this in from of infrastructure, team training, partnerships etc in order to optimize on food safety, handling and exceed customer experience in this disruptive environment, while mitigating on cost of service vs profit bottom-line?

    John | November 20, 2019 13:22

Hello WILLIAM, Thank you for the insightful comments. Indeed delivery of any sort, leave alone food delivery requires meticulous planning to ensure safety of the product in transit and that the quality is not impaired. You can reach out to us on [email protected] and we can assess how we can work together to ensure delivery services grow and are of the highest quality while serving our customers.

    Dinko | October 31, 2019 12:19

Mr. Ngari, rafiki na kaka wangu, do you track and analyze the movement of your SafeBoda riders and customers as well, in an effort to predict demand and send supply to the right places at the right time?

    John | November 20, 2019 13:26

Hello Dinko, Yes indeed; SafeBoda takes all measures necessary and possible to ensure customer service delivery is consistently the best. Rides and customer behavior analytics are of course a key source of information to make those decisions.

    Eva | October 31, 2019 12:12

I would like to work with you...advise how I go about it

    John | November 20, 2019 13:27

Hello Eva, You can check for job openings on FUZU as well as All the best!

    Edwin | October 31, 2019 12:05

To the 3 gentlemen Ricky, Alastair & John - on Technology and governance, 1. Tech evolution has been one of the biggest breaks for most of the startups, but as well been their downfall, this been due to data privacy. Company have been leveraging on data mining and sharing with 3rd party whether for market survey or monitoring trends, as a company with such powers of data hosting how do you choose between whether to go for money or morals. 2. In regards to market penetration, is the company eying other market outside Africa and as well is it a sellable idea even to 1st world, also when it comes to selecting market let say Asian market where government protects local companies even imposing certain policies in governance, what governs such decisions whether to venture into such markets and loose customers privacy or miss such market.

    ogaibo | October 31, 2019 12:02

What do you say about cryptocurrency trading?

    Joy | October 31, 2019 11:56

Hi,Alastair, oould you kindly be my mentor?

    AKELLO | October 31, 2019 11:56

What strategies do you use in your company?

    Joy | October 31, 2019 11:55

Hi Ricky, I really admire your growth. I would like to know if you feared starting to implement your idea. How did you finally start implementing the idea? How did you grow it from an idea to a practical thing? What about investors? How did you approach them?

    Mutai | October 31, 2019 11:52

when it comes energy consumption. How efficient is the business in terms of fuel economy and cost?

    Margaret | October 31, 2019 11:51

To the Trio, mostly one may have a business idea but financial support becomes a limiting factor so one ends up to job seeking so how do we get financial support to become job creators

    Paul | October 31, 2019 11:51

Good work but rethink on jobless persons that keep on rising and Now what are your future strategy to counter this.

    Cris | October 31, 2019 11:50

My question goes to the, Alastair Sussock,John Ngari,Ricky Rapa Thompson; What is the niche about safe boda?,and why is it that they most trusted in most town compared to other road users?

    Claire | October 31, 2019 11:49

Hullo could you please get an option of ordering two safebodas on the same phone ate the same time since it doesn't carry two people and also please extend the services to rural areas too

    Eliud Kipchoge | October 31, 2019 11:48

Hi there, Eluid here. Alastair, what your best day at SafeBoda? What was your worst day? No human is limited and no boda driver is limited.

    Byron | October 31, 2019 11:40

What drove you to start this business considering the huge number of "bodabodas" on our streets? How did you manage to infiltrate the flooded industry to become a profit making organization? What are the prerequisites before giving a rider the chance to work with you?

    ESTHER | October 31, 2019 11:34

''John Ngari, was it an easy task when you started your career journey? Also what tactics did you use to scale up your career journey?

    John | November 20, 2019 13:34

Hello Esther, Thank you for your question. Indeed starting a career, like any other journey just needs a first step. I think for that first step to be fruitful enough to inspire a second step, one must be deeply aware, very open and honest about what skills one has. That first step, in my view has to be about Creating an inventory of general, technical and personal skills, as well as competencies to identify: "What do I know? How good am I in what I know? And, what do I need to do to close out my gaps in knowledge, skills and experience.'' I think that awareness, and being open to learning more (on the go) is what amplifies experience - that you were able to apply what you knew, and learn more while doing so. Always being open to learn, and dedicating time and resources to do so - I think is the tactic that worked for me.I hope this helps!

    SULEIMAN | October 31, 2019 11:28

John Ngari. Is it possible this Company to reach all 47 counties in Kenya for investment and opportunity? Thank you

    John | November 20, 2019 13:40

Hello Suleiman, Thank you for your question. Indeed reaching to all 47 counties for investment and opportunity would be very ideal. But we also acknowledge that not all 47 counties are at the same development level that would facilitate growth of an app based platform. Indeed, internet coverage, smartphone penetration and other infrastructure and regulatory requirements are not equal across all 47 counties. But that won't stop SafeBoda from empowering entrepreneurs, one at a time, giving them opportunity to invest and grow in their respective areas through our innovative solutions.

    BAMWINE | October 31, 2019 11:28

    Hey Alistair, Ricky and Ngari.
