“What do you want to be when you grow up?” We were all asked this question at some point during our childhood. Most kids knew what they wanted to be while others struggled a bit. However, this depicts that were meant to grow.

Growth is a continuous process of life and even more so when it comes to your career. So often, growth in the corporate world is presumed to become a manager and then keep working your way up the hierarchy. But that isn’t the only way to progress in your career and achieve a sense of professional satisfaction. Follow these steps to ensure you continuous growth:

1. Set a goal

Where do you see yourself in the next 2 or 5 years? Maybe you want to make more money, get a promotion or move to a different line of work. Whatever the answer is, you should be honest with yourself. State it clearly and write it down so you can refer to it again and be committed. Be sure to include how you intend to achieve your desired goal as well.

2. Opportunities

Take the initiative to come out of your comfort zone and understand the running of your organization. If there are classes or training programs that your company offers then avail yourself to attend. Such programs are focused on helping employees to develop their careers. Venture out with your team and coworkers to build a network within your workplace.

3. Take the leap

Instead of waiting for the right time, just make time right. Sometimes all it takes is that leap of faith to find out if you are ready. Before you take it, make sure you can land on your feet or at least have a parachute. Examine whether you have to your full potential in your current role. If yes then take the leap on to the next level of your career.

4. Personal branding

When you’re not busy working on any project then take up projects that differ from your usual line of work. Find out more about what is being done and the people involved. You not only upgrade your skills but also build on your profile across various departments in the work place.

5. Mentorship

It’s easy to think that you have it all figured out and are heading in the right direction. Having a coach or mentor to guide you on developing your professional skills is important. It may be a person who is in a current role that you aspire to be in. Once you’ve identified who that person is then ask if they’re interested in being part of your growth. If they agree then be receptive to their feedback and constructive criticism. If they decline then you can reach out to certified Career Coaches on Fuzu.
