Asking for a promotion can also be nerve-wracking but this does not mean you shy away from it. Here are some tips on how to make your case.

Human beings desire a level of satisfaction in all aspects of their lives, this is not different when it comes to career advancement. The first step in achieving career growth is going after or working towards a promotion. But truth be told, this process is not a walk in the park. You must work smart to prove you can take up more responsibilities. Asking for a promotion can also be nerve-wracking but this does not mean you shy away from it.

Here are some tips on how to make your case.

1.Reflect

People need promotions for different reasons; hence you should hit the nail on the head when coming up with your reasons for the promotion. Needs may vary from wanting more money, climbing up the corporate ladder, leadership, etc.

2. Build your case

After analyzing exactly what you want, the next important step is to build your case. This can be done by definitively outlining your proven track record.

3. Timing

They say timing is everything hence getting a perfect time is important. Ask after something good has happened, not after layoffs or the day the company loses key clients. Planning the best time to ask for the promotion is a strategic move.

4. Follow up

A detailed email should be sent to your boss outlining the major points that were discussed. Your promotion will be taken seriously if you set goals for yourself. Do not forget to mention the set goals in the email and create a date for a review of your performance. Lastly, make sure you follow up.

The don’ts include:

1. Comparing yourself to co-worker

Justifying a promotion based on someone else’s performance is a mistake. Remember comparing yourself to a co-worker does not prove your worth.

2. Make threats

As an employee you should be part of the long-term growth of the company, making threats brings out the selfish part of you and it is not a good look.

In conclusion

Do not get discouraged if you do not get what you want right away.  Asking for a promotion is not a simple process, but if you follow these guidelines you can quickly turn a no into a yes.
