Experience or Education: What’s More Important?

The job market in Kenya has become very competitive and a good transcript is not enough to get your foot in the door. Research has shown that most hiring managers today are looking for candidates who can prove that they have the capability to perform the job at hand.

We’ve all been there, growing up you were told “work hard in school and you’ll get a good job.” So you burned the midnight oil all throughout primary, high school and university in order to get top grades. But what happens when you have the best academic experience to put on your CV but very little or no work experience to show for it?

Recent statistics from Fuzu have shown that 56.1% of the users on the platform have 0-2 years of experience followed by:

2-5 years: 27.2%

6-10 years: 12.3%

11-15 years: 2.9%

16-25 years: 1.2%

And the best way for them to determine this is is to look at an applicant’s work experience. Only in entry level jobs such as internships is the level of education an important factor.

42.1% of the registered applicants on Fuzu.com have a Bachelor’s degree as their highest level of education while 25.6% have a Diploma/Associate, 17.5% have a high school certificate, 10% have completed Primary school and 4.2% have completed Vocational school.

    Experience is quite important as it shows the employer that you can actually put into practice what you've learnt theoretically. But then you can't practice what you haven't learnt now can you???

    I would advice fresh graduates not to be choosy and be aggressive in job hunting. Take whatever pay as long as it's in the direction you want your career to move. "Stay hungry, stay foolish"...learn, query, apply ... you will be surprised how fast you can grow in 6 or so months with hard work and dedication.

    Education is the experience that has been codified into books. So instead of you reinventing the wheel, you are taught about it so that you can continue from where the last person left through applying that knowledge in the field/practical/after college. Without these codified experience(Education), we will all be forced to start from square one. Take for example someone employed in a shop who does not know how to read, write and add/subtract forcing the shopkeeper who is experienced to teach him the 'experience" of how he adds and subtracts in the shop. Compare it to someone who has been taught the 'experience' of how people add and subtract in class and is employed in the same shop.

    First thing first.education comes first then with the knowledge one applies their understanding of the knowledge in practise. one gains the experience through practise.so graduates need opportunities to practise their knowledge.getting or gaining knowledge is diverse.apprenticeship was an informal way of learning where the young learnt from observation.then they would be given chances to practice with careful observance of their teachers.how does one practise if one dont know what they need to do.knowleged comes first.experience later.

    Every job has got its own requirement, all technical jobs require experience but sometimes its unfair for the fresh graduates to be ruled out for such vacancies. I think they should be given an opportunity to explore their capabilities, and who knows, they maybe better than those who have 10+ field experience.

    With experience as the main factor, then I think graduate are ending into a flop, we might become obsolete immediately after we leave campus... A Vacancy will require a three experience, how, as a graduate would you that job? I think education should rule out experience at entry level.... Maybe to welcome new ideas that are got from books.... Experience will mount up as time ticks by.

    I think both are important because in every job advert there must be some academic level which is required and all in all experience is the best tool since it detrmines the out put both to educated and uneducated groups.the two goes hand in hand

    I will go with experience, experience is the king let say it in this way ; a diploma with 10yrs of experience and MBA degree with 1/2 yr experience who rule?

    My opinion is varied. Inasmuch as both fields are important for any meaningful progress, I believe experience is the factor that determines the level of education required to make tasks easier or less hard to tackle. Consider the fact that in the olden days before the introduction of formal education, humans used to performe tasks which they somehow excelled. Out of the struggles they went through they devised tools to make works easier to perform. They kept on modernizing the tools they devised without going to any schools for formal education. In this regard I would say that experience has an upper hand than education because after education one will have to get trained by an experienced person. Cite situations where university graduates are trained to do some jobs by people whose highest level of education is village polytechnic but have high experience.

    Both are relevant as to my opinion. There some tasks that are so complex that without good education, one is unable to handle them. Experience also is a matter to reduce extra costs by training new recruits.

    Actually there is a big different between the One who's knows and the One who's know and know much about, so education is everything because the market of today need technology to run business, so experience only isn't work proper.

    I believe experience is more important than education level,because it proves that the individual can get the job done. The education system is also to blame for keeping content that is no longer relevant to the challenges of the modern world. I wish there were more opportunities created for students who have the qualifications but lack in experience in the workplace in order to bridge the gap between education and experience
