You have to take the initiative of learning and understanding how to leverage on your strengths and weaknesses in order to advance in your career.

You may have some remarkable strengths and dreadful weaknesses but if you don’t know how to leverage them, you’ll miss out on great opportunities. Unlike talents and skills that are learnable and forgettable, strengths and weaknesses are generally innate – the brain naturally functions in a special way. You can easily determine your personal strengths using a range of tests. Use the following tips to successfully leverage your personal strengths and weaknesses.

1. Identify complementary strengths in your friends and colleagues

Rather than being worried about your weaknesses, identify a person with complementary strengths and therefore capable of filling the void. For instance, an achiever may concentrate on the checklist instead of prioritization. As such, they may consider partnering with a strategic colleague to assist with narrowing down the list. This will allow them to concentrate on the most crucial responsibilities.

2. Avoid focusing on limitations

If you intend to be a productive and successful individual, you have to make decisions on the basis of your strengths and qualities – not your limitations and weaknesses. You have to concentrate on the elements that will boost your success rather than those that depict impossibilities.

3. Take ownership of your personal development

Irrespective of your strength combination, it is important to focus on your skill development. For the purposes of adding skills to your strength combination, we must take it upon ourselves to take charge of our personal development process.

Possessing strengths and knowing how to use them in your career are two different things. You have to take the initiative of learning and understanding how to leverage on your strengths and weaknesses in order to advance in your career.
