Some of the best athletes on the planet have proved to be talented in other fields, Jacob Ojee is one of them. Best known for his accomplishments in the rugby pitch, Ojee stands as one of the most accomplished rugby players. Seemingly everyone who is a rugby fan knows about the KCB RFC star who has played for the Kenya 15s and captained the 7s team.

Jacob has managed to graduate with a major in Finance from USIU and carve out a business career in personalized apparel design & branding while playing professional rugby.

We caught up with him to get insights on how he has achieved remarkable feats of athleticism and what his Finance and business career mean to him on and off the pitch.

Kindly introduce yourself; who is Jacob Ojee and what does he do for a living?

Jacob Ojee is a 4th born in a very large and extended family of 9. I’m a rugby player for Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) Rugby Club and I’ve also been fortunate enough to represent the country on the international level for both the 7s and 15s versions of the game. I also run a fashion, branding and merchandising business through my company, Revibe OutLook Brand, formed in 2014 and a sole proprietorship but recently registered as a private company.

Tell us a little about your background and how it influenced you to join sports?

I grew up in a large family with lots of boys. As with most households in the country we grew following and playing football be it at home with friends or at school. But I picked up rugby from my elder brother who after joining high school switched from football to rugby and really excelled in it. He was my major influence to joining the sport.

Your love for rugby didn’t hold you back from pursuing a career in finance, how come?

I’d say growing up I’ve always been a competitive person and that worked as a driving force to make me want to excel in everything I do. I believe education is a key part in the general development of a person; it’s an empowerment tool. That’s why despite my love for the games and the passion and drive that I have to have the highest success in it, I’ve also strived to have the same success if not better in school and my career.

As a finance professional, how do you balance employment and being a professional athlete?

At the moment I don’t work an 8-5 job as a profession. I’ve mostly just done short contract jobs. My main focus has been building up my company and my brand and that’s what takes up the bulk of my time, so I have to find a balance between that and rugby. That calls for very early mornings, long days and at times late nights but that’s the sacrifice I have to make. The experience is amazing

Looking back, what has been the highlight of your sporting career?

I’ve had a couple of memorable moments in my career this far and I’ve been lucky to have played with some of the best players in the best teams of this era. Winning the African 7s Cup with the Kenya 7s in 2019 and securing the Olympic qualification ranks at the top of the list together with winning the 3-peat Kenya Cup trophies with KCB while going unbeaten in one of them. These were very special moments among many.

You also run a fashion business - Outlook, how did this come to be and what are some of the milestones you’ve hit?

The OutLook has been a childhood dream that I had since back in high school that came up through my love for fashion and music - hip hop music. I always saw fashion brands being displayed in music videos and shows and just like any other kid I was intrigued by the flashy outfits and I just developed a passion for it and dreamt to own my own brand one day. Fast forward, here we are haha. The OutLook brand just as I’d pointed out earlier is a fashion, branding and merchandising company dealing with all classy, trendy and fashionable urban wear and also deals with corporate branding and merchandising. Since its establishment 2014 it’s seen a steady growth curve and we hope for even more growth in the coming years.

Who is your biggest inspiration?

My family is my inspiration. They keep me going.
