Kenya
East African Portland Cement to re-hire on contract terms
Seems like all is not lost after all for East African Portland Cement (EAPC) employees. The cement manufacturer has revealed that it has reconfigured its jobs and that the employees who were to be laid off can reapply to be hired on contract basis. This comes a week after it had announced plans to layoff of its entire workforce in order to restructure and reduce its operational costs that saw it make losses of up to Ksh. 8 million daily.
Kenya ranked 2nd best innovation hub in Sub-Saharan Africa
The World Intellectual Property Organization has ranked Kenya as the second best innovation hub in Sub-Saharan Africa in its latest Global Innovation Index (GII) 2019 report, South Africa and Mauritius came third. Kenya’s stellar performance has been attributed to easy access to credit and microfinance loans by startups.
"Kenya has a track record of recording high levels of innovation, outperforming on levels of innovation relative to GDP for the ninth consecutive year, an excellent record at par with other lower-middle-income countries like India, the Republic of Moldova, and Vietnam, " read the report.
17-year old receives the prestigious Diana Award for his innovation
When it comes to innovation very few people focus on creating impact driven businesses, especially at a young age. But this is different for 17-year-old Mombasa based student Ziyaan Virji. Ziyaan received the Diana Award on Monday during the international Youth Day for his initiative called Affordable and Accessible Sanitation for Women (AASW). The award is considered to be one of the highest accolades for social action awarded to young people in memory of Princess Diana.
You don’t think it’s that big of a deal? Well, let’s put into perspective for you. Launched in 2017, AASW has helped almost 300 girls access menstrual hygiene across six different countries i.e. Kenya, Tanzania, Pakistan, India, Nigeria and the UAE. The voluntary youth initiative produces and distributes reusable sanitary packages and equips girls with skills to give themselves and their communities access to menstrual hygiene. Hats off to you Ziyaan!
Uganda
Kampala set to host the 2019 regional logistics expo
Uganda Freight Forwarders Association has announced that it will host it’s regional logistics expo in Kampala on 21st and 22nd August. The expo themed ‘Innovative and Sustainable Solutions for Freight Logistics’ is expected to attract over 500 players in the logistics sector across the region who will discuss development opportunities and challenges facing the freight and logistics industry.
