My career journey was not a textbook experience but I own it and embrace it. I love what I am doing currently and I am excited for what else it unleashes within me.

The role of Community Managers has emerged as a robust profession, especially for individuals who are good at bringing people together and providing solutions to problems. To get perspective of what exactly they do, we thought we’d ask Fuzu’s Community Manager a few questions about her experience and get to know her a bit more in our Life at Fuzu series.

Faith Wambui’s story is testament that finding career satisfaction comes from finding a perfect blend between: what you enjoy, what you’re good at and what the world needs. Here is what she had to say.

From starting a career as a Volunteering Counsellor at the Gender Violence Recovery Centre to becoming Fuzu’s Community Manager, please share a quick overview of your roles throughout your career.

I studied Psychology, and somewhere in the course of my studies I knew I didn’t want to pursue it as a career. Following my time at the Gender Violence Recovery Centre, I embarked on experiences that enabled me to identify my passion and planning my career around it.

I joined organisations in school that gave me intense experiences and I developed skills that I couldn’t get in any classroom. This was in AIESEC and Model United Nations. I held various roles ranging from event coordination, stakeholder communication, entity management and team management. These experiences are the stepping stone to my current role. I developed a passion for people and nurturing experiences and Fuzu has enabled me to do this and also develop myself. My career journey was not a textbook experience but I own it and embrace it.

I love what I am doing currently and I am excited for what else it unleashes within me.

What do you enjoy most about your role as Community Manager at Fuzu?

The people. I enjoy nurturing experiences and interacting with a variety of people and learning more about them.

This is a very unique and important role today when it comes to engaging consumers. What does it entail?

Listening to your consumers and developing strategies, also understanding what your community expects from you and see how you can deliver this while still driving your business objectives.

Why is passion vital for one to be a successful Community Manager?

First things first, I believe passion is vital for any experience you decide to take up.

For a successful community manager, having passion for people is ideal, as you interact with different stakeholders in different situations. People are important because they make up your community and are the reason the role exists in the first place.

What advice can you give fellow Community Managers on how they can keep their community active and engaging?

Be very open-minded! If 2020 has shown us anything, it’s that we need to get comfortable in the uncomfortable and adapt accordingly. Try the unconventional ways, be innovative and ensure that you listen to what your consumers want, they know what they want to consume and strongly guide what you need to do for them. Also, keep learning and be curious about what else you can do.

What are the stand out features for professionals on Fuzu?

They are curious and are constantly looking for what else they can do to learn and prepare themselves for future opportunities.

Any partying shots?

Invest in yourself, your passion and your growth; not just money, but also time and skills.
