The cost of living is going up quite fast leaving most people’s salaries playing catch up. If you’ve been in such a situation, ideas start streaming into your mind. You start thinking of a business idea but after critically evaluating it and being honest with yourself you decide to park the idea - maybe you are not cut out to be an entrepreneur, at least for now. Then you decide to for the alternative, ask for a salary raise. How are you going to get that yes? Using these three negotiation skills will help you get what you want.

1. Why you should get a raise

Employers often work with facts. So, you nee dto be clear how you have helped the business grow. Present your achievements and accomplishments that make you qualify for a raise. Together with other relevant reasons, your employer is more likely to consider your raise and give you that yes.

2. Be appreciative

The employer gave you an opportunity to be an employee providing you with a platform to grow and advance in your career. Hence, you should show gratitude for the position you hold and the compensations you get as much as you would like a pay rise.

3. Keep an open mind

When negotiating, you should always keep an open mind. Yes, your reasons might be valid, yes you might be the best employee but a pay rise is never guaranteed. But if you have the best negotiation skills, your employer might not say no to you. The employer might not be in a position to offer you a raise but with an open mind, you are able to negotiate for other benefits in your favor.

In summary, negotiation is about being confident in yourself and having the right people skills; believing in yourself and that you deserve to have a raise. With the right negotiation skills accompanied with confidence, you are up for that yes.
