Access Afya is a private social enterprise that is making healthcare in Kenya better, cheaper, and easier to access. We are creating a network of micro-clinics that provide consultations, client education, on-site diagnostics, and authentic medication. We also run novel field health programs that sell care directly to people in the field at community areas such as schools and churches. We work within a fragmented healthcare system, where our target market is uninsured and often does not get care when they need it because their options are expensive, inconvenient, or unpleasant. Our model brings a safe first access point directly into underserved communities, encouraging earlier and more frequent conversations about health. Patients pay small fees, making each microclinic a self-sustaining operation. Access Afya was founded in 2012 and currently runs two clinics and a Healthy Schools program serving over 10,000 clients in Nairobi’s southern informal settlements. The organization is starting to expand its work, increasing the number of patients served, staff, and sites.
