Kenya, among many other African countries has a large number of graduates and youths who are unemployed. Most of this youths, unless empowered, end up doing menial jobs or turning into crime just to make ends meet. Most job seekers, being desperate to find a job have fallen prey to scammers who promise them jobs after they pay only for them to discover that neither the jobs nor company existed. Despite the scams, there are genuine opportunities out there being offered by employers to the youth.

It is with this thought in mind that many job seekers have become skeptical to even apply for jobs or any opportunities that may eventually land them something that they can use to improve on their lives. Many have become pessimistic to an extent that when such opportunities are advertised they pay no attention to it and instead call it blackmail, or a scam or ride on the fact that nothing can be free.

In the recent past for example, we have advertised free six weeks Financial Sales Training Opportunities by Generation Kenya that targets the youth aged between 20-30 years who got a D+ and above and are either unemployed or underemployed. Generation Kenya has had an amazing success rate ever since they started the initiative and have helped many youths in Kenya better their lives.

However, some people feel that nothing can be free and that the only people who ought to get such opportunities must have acquired a higher level of education. They forget that such initiatives by such companies are started in order to help improve people’s lives. What happened to doing research before doubting such genuine opportunities?

Such thinking mentality needs to change. The youth need to know that there are genuine initiatives out there aimed at helping them improve their lives that are not necessarily out to make money out of the jobless youth. As a youth, how many of such genuine opportunities/initiatives or jobs are going to pass you by as you maintain your doubting Thomas mentality?
