Asking for a promotion can be hard; from listing down the reasons why you need the promotion to approaching your boss and convincing them to give it to you. But if your work is speaking for itself and your boss notices this you may not have to ask.

If you want to advance in your position what you do is just as important as what you say. So how do you make sure that your boss notices that you are ready for a promotion?

1. Exceed Expectations
Do not only do work that is within your docket. Go beyond your role and take on projects that no one else is going to do. This will show that you take initiative and are ready to take on any task.

2. Work on Growth
When looking to get a promotion, status should not be your goal, instead focus on growth within the organization. Your hunger to learn and improve your skills will show your boss that your primary motivation is to grow and thrive within your role instead of getting that new office.

3. Self Improvement
All throughout your career you should always challenge yourself. For every time you improve your skills you should also work on the things that need more improvement and could stand in the way of your success. Your boss is the perfect person to let you know the areas that you could improve and then it’s for you constantly work on those areas.

4. Collaborate
Working in today’s corporate environment require that you work on some team projects. As the saying goes, teamwork makes the dream work. Any opportunity that you get to work on your teamwork skills make sure to take it on. There’s nothing that will impress your boss more than seeing that you are a team player who adds value to project collaboration.

Try these steps before having an uncomfortable discussion with your boss about giving you that promotion. Let your work and ethic speak for itself and your boss will work on helping you reach your career goals by giving you that promotion.

I am at my best in a job where I can work with other people but also have the chance to concentrate in privacy and build trusted relationships with my co-workers. I also am confident and succeed in performing complex tasks and processes within a tight schedule, and occasional work stress does not bother me. Tasks, where I have an opportunity to solve problems, bring the best out of me.
