Job Summary

M-KOPA Labs, the Research & Development arm within M-KOPA, is looking for an exceptional Partnerships & Business Development Manager to join its growing team.
This is an exciting time to join Labs. As M-KOPA expands its product range from solar home systems to digital financial services and internet solutions, we look to hire an experienced grant
fundraiser to fuel our R&D pipeline. The role will support Labs’ new business development pursuits with grant proposals and forming partnerships with corporates interested in innovating Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) connected products and services. Labs already has a successful track record partnering with international development donors, such as Shell Foundation, FCDO (formally DFID), Mastercard Foundation,
Africa Development Bank, and corporate philanthropists. The Partnerships & Business Development Manager will work closely with the Head of Labs based in the UK and collaboratively with operational teams based throughout Africa.
In this position, you will take a leading role to develop persuasive, logical proposals that illustrate the impact of the PAYG business model and highlight Labs’ R&D capabilities and market expertise to donors. We are seeking entrepreneurial candidates with proposal management experience, excellent written and presentational communication skills, and a problem-solving mindset.
This role is central to creating impact in the lives of M-KOPA’s current and future customers, steering proposal teams from identification of opportunities through to the submission of winning proposals.
With others in the Labs team, the successful applicant will drive new, and tried and tested ways, to produce the highest quality of work, be it a business strategic proposal or a briefing note to our in-country teams.
An essential part of your job will be travel to the UK and overseas and, therefore, flexible working hours are needed to perform this role.

  • Successful delivery of all business development activities from opportunity identification to proposal submission with a specific focus on donor-funded programmes (government development funds and private foundations).
  • Leading the pursuit process and production of proposals, capability statements, expressions of interest; ensuring documents are produced within deadlines, client specifications and to professional standards.
  • Capturing timely donor intelligence and follow-up.
  • Conducting reviews and collating feedback, ensuring that any lessons learnt are appropriately disseminated and acted on.
  • Oversight of proposals including writing winning proposals and working with the operations and internal subject matter experts to respond to proposal requirements.
  • Maintaining and strengthening business development systems and procedures, including capacity building of colleagues across the business.
  • Building strong relationships with internal stakeholders including pursuit teams, in-country teams and technical specialists across M-KOPA’s offices and departments.
  • Training and advising other staff in best practice in proposal management ensuring consistent approach is applied across the business.
  • Representing M-KOPA in external events in the UK and elsewhere
The successful applicant will have strong analytical skills to lead a range of quantitative, qualitative and mixed-methods research of projects for customers who have come to expect a responsive, timely and insightful service.
The ideal candidate will have:
  • A minimum of 5 to 7 years in a business development role, or similar;
  • 1 to 3 years of industry/sector experience and/or a strong understanding of the African context;
  • Strong proposal/project/sales pipeline management skills; An accreditation in proposal development best practice will be an advantage;
  • An entrepreneurial nature and strong business acumen with understanding of social enterprises or private sector development in emerging markets;
  • Exceptional communications skills with the ability to create compelling and concise narratives for a range of audiences using Word and PowerPoint;
  • Superb problem-solving skills and the ability to see ‘the big picture’;
  • Strong organisational skills and able to prioritise to meet deadlines in a complex, demand-driven environment;
  • Prior experience working with development donors or corporate philanthropists is an advantage;
  • A willingness and ability to travel is required for this role;
  • Bachelors or advanced degree in business, international development, or similar.
In addition, the candidate will have:
  • Strong relationships with development donors and corporate philanthropists.
  • Passion for the role of mobile technology in development.
  • Ability to design and articulate, both in writing and in-person, sector-specific (e.g. health, agriculture, education) value propositions for mobile connectivity.
  • Comfortable working with remote teams, startups, and/or social enterprises.
  • Understanding of the donor landscape (aid agencies, private foundations, multilaterals, etc.) desirable.
  • Multiple years living and working in Africa desirable.
