Job Summary

e Roots is a strategic food security programme whose vision is to ensure there is enoughfood for everyone everywhere. The programme works with small community DevelopmentGroups and schools within our Sites and provides them with training to use simple buteffective technologies to grow their own food and develop their livelihoods. e RootsProgramme provides the structure, oversight and accountability required to ensure farmersmove from dependency to self sufficiency. Groups are self governed, directed andmaintained by farmers taking full ownership of their futures.


  1. Diploma in Agriculture.
  2. Good knowledge of current trends in agriculture (organic farming, value addition, green house farming, animal husbandry and improvement, agribusiness etc.)
  3. Five years hands-on experience in food security development at community level.
  4. Experience working with resource poor small scale farmers.
  5. Well-developed community training skills and experience in use of participatory approaches.
  6. Good interpersonal skills and proficient in English and Kiswahili
  7. Basic financial accounting and management skills are highly desirable.
  8. Excellent report writing skills
  9. Good time management and organization skills
  10. Computer literate


  1. Mobilize, guide the community in developing their Action Plans
  2. Monitor and evaluate e Roots project progress. Offer extension services to Chalice Sponsored Families to ensure that they are producing enough food for their families and surplus for the markets
  3. Maintain to standards Site and community demonstration plots
  4. Work closely with schools to initiate and support agricultural clubs and demonstration plots for learning as well as supplement school feeding programme
  5. Prepare and submit quarterly progress reports including harvest, financial and procurement reports
  6. Collaborate /Network with Government agencies, research institutions and other NGOs to influence policies and practices as well as improve learning
  7. Prepare project operating budgets and monitored the same to ensure the project is implemented within approved budget.
  8. Ensure that donor regulations are adhered to and that necessary administrative, financial and implementation controls are observed
  9. Plan and coordinate all e Roots project activities within the site.
  10. Build the capacities of the Community Development Group (CDG)
  11. Develop Site e Roots annual work plans, quarterly work schedule and community capacity building schedule.
  12. Participate in the sponsorship program as may be delegated or assigned by the Site Director.

Starehe Girls’ Centre is a National boarding school that offers secondary education to financially disadvantaged girls from all Counties of Kenya. The school was founded in January 2005 as a charitable institution. It emulates the spirit of the much renowned Starehe Boys’ Centre. It caters for all the girls’ academic and social needs. The Starehe Girls’ Centre is a charity and a national girls’ high school. It is located in Njathaini, Bustani Estate off Kiambu Road, a rural setting 20 km north of Nairobi, in Roysambu Zone, Kasarani Division, Kasarani District in Nairobi County. The 55 acres of land on which the Starehe Girls’ Centre stands belonged to Mr. Duncan Gray and Mrs. Jane Auld Gray. They leased the land to Limuru Girls’ Centre which was opened in May 1982 under the Trusteeship of Dr. M. P. Chandaria, Mr. Eliud N. Njoroge and others. This Centre closed in 2002. In the Year 2003 the Trustees of Limuru Girls’ Centre agreed to have the land leased to the Trustees, of the would be Starehe Girls’ Centre. Among these were Dr. Chandaria, Mr. Njoroge and Dr. Eddah Gachukia, among others.
