Job Summary

The People’s Action for Learning Network (PAL Network) is seeking a competent Assistant Program Officer - Communications for the Secretariat office in Nairobi. The Assistant Program Officer will be responsible for maintaining and regularly updating the PAL Network website in WordPress and the PAL Network Social Media platforms; collecting and drafting layout of the PAL Network quarterly newsletter in three languages in MailChimp, providing support to the Advocacy and Communications Working Group, and providing general communications support to the network.

Person Specification
Evidence that applications meet the essential criteria will be assessed by the following methods: Application (A), Interview (I), Test (T) and References (R), as indicated below:

• At least 3 years’ experience working in digital communications (A,I,R)
• Demonstrable experience of using WordPress and MailChimp (T)
• Active social media user (Twitter and Facebook) (A,T)
• Excellent written communications skills in English (T)
• Excellent time management skills and the ability to take initiative and deliver results on short notice (T,R)
• Experience using Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign or Illustrator) an advantage (I,T)
• Experience using multimedia production software or video editing an advantage (I,T)

Terms and Conditions
• This post is offered as a 1-year contract starting April 2018. The contract may be renewable provided funding is secured for the post and satisfactory progress is made.
• The standard working week is 40 hours per week. However, the demands of the job are likely to be such that a willingness to work longer hours as sometimes required is necessary.


A. WEBSITE (20%)
• Maintain and update the PAL Network website in WordPress
• Source and produce engaging content for the blog
• Regularly upload blog posts to the website
• Make necessary changes to website content as requested

• Draft quarterly social media content calendars for Twitter and Facebook, planning around network and international events throughout the year
• Assist in the planning and implementation of social media campaigns on Twitter and Facebook
• Maintain and update the organisational Flickr and YouTube accounts

• Collect content and photographs for the quarterly newsletter and send for translation
• Draft content for the quarterly newsletter as requested
• Layout the quarterly newsletter in Mail Chimp for English, French and Spanish language versions
• Update newsletter distribution lists as required

• Support the effective functioning of the PAL Network Advocacy and Communications Working Group
• Act as the ‘Brand Guardian’ for the PAL Network, ensuring consistency across all internal and external communications
• Develop and maintain working relations with Communication Officers in member organizations
• Produce monthly analytics reports on the PAL Network website, social media and quarterly newsletter
• Proofread content including but not limited to: social media posts and blog articles
• Draft mini communications plans linked to specific network events
• Act as the custodian of the PAL Network Camera and take photographs at network meetings and events as required

E. OTHER (10%)
• Attend, and fully participate in network and staff meetings and retreats as required
• Write monthly and annual activity reports, and use these as the basis for monthly and annual engagements with the line manager
• Perform such other duties as may be required from time to time

The People’s Action for Learning Network (PAL Network) is a south-south network whose members work across three continents to assess the basic reading and numeracy competencies of over 1 million children, in their homes, through citizen-led assessments. The PAL Network Secretariat is based in Nairobi, Kenya. The PAL Network Secretariat team support and coordinate the work of the network members, building in-country capacity and strengthening advocacy for citizen-led assessment assessments as an effective, low-cost, scalable model for bringing children's learning to the centre of policy and practice. Additionally, the Secretariat team assist in coordinating 6 Working Groups and 4 Regional Hubs, as well as providing administrative, and logistical support for network-wide events.
