Job Summary

For appointment to this position, a candidate must:
(i) be a full Professor or Associate Professor and holder of an earned Doctorate degree or equivalent qualification from a University recognized in Kenya;
(ii) have served substantively and successfully in a recognized university as either a Dean of School/Faculty, Deputy Principal of a Constituent College, and Chairperson of an Academic Department or equivalent position for a cumulative period of at least six (6) years with proven leadership and strategic management;
(iii) have knowledge of Public Finance Management;
(iv) have thorough knowledge of the structural, legislative and regulatory framework administering University Education in Kenya;
(v) have proven scholarly record demonstrated by research publications in internationally peer reviewed journals in their areas of specialization and successful supervision of students at Masters and Doctoral levels with proven track record in formulating and managing academic programmes;
(vi) have demonstrable experience in networking, fundraising and resource mobilization;
(vii)comply fully with the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya on leadership, ethics and integrity; and
(viii) have a proven track record in management of change, transformative and strategic leadership.


Duties and responsibilities of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) include:
(i) being in charge of academic function of the University;
(ii) provision of secretariat to the Senate and all committees of the Senate;
(iii) being responsible for the allocation of buildings, rooms and offices used for academic purpose in the University as well as the formulation of the rules governing their allocation and utilization;
(iv) in consultation with the Vice-Chancellor, be responsible for provision of student’s accommodation;
(v) overseeing increase of overall student population by enhancing the existing market strategies, offering relevant and market driven programmes and development of new programmes responsive to market needs;
(vi) ensuring increase of proportion of postgraduate students in relation to the undergraduate students;
(vii) ensuring competitiveness and employability of graduates;
(viii) to sustain existing partnerships and collaborations between the University and relevant institutions both locally and internationally;
(ix) coordinating application of ICT in fostering effective teaching, learning, research and innovation;
(x) undertaking such other duties as may be assigned or delegated by the Vice Chancellor
Expected deliverables of the office
(i) Effective and well managed, academic programmes, guided by University’s Strategic Plan, the University Statutes and the Universities Act;
(ii) Accurate and contemporary approaches in academic matters to support decision making;
(iii) Appropriate procedures in managing teaching and learning in conformity with the Constitution of Kenya and relevant laws in place; and
(iv) Duties and responsibilities delegated by the Vice Chancellor well executed.
