Job Summary

The Earth Observation expert/Remote sensing (provides the necessary technical expertise to support implementation of the Nile Cooperation for Climate Resilience project with specific focus on expanding use of Earth Observation for adaptive water resources management. Specifically, the Expert shall support the Nile-SEC in the collection, compilation, evaluation, interpretation, generation, maintenance and distribution of spatial information (including remotely sensed data and GIS information layers) for water resources management applications, including environmental and socio-economic analysis of the Nile Basin.

Responsibilities

• Creation and maintenance of spatial data repository (finished products as well as remote sensing imageries) for NBI; Maintain and expand the data repository and related meta database:
• Identify appropriate data sources of spatial information layers and digital imagery data from global websites, collect/compile such information/data and imagery, interpret and extract information to support activities of the Nile-Sec
• Compile, process and customize for the Nile Basin such data includes Satellite Rainfall data, Evapo-transpiration, Temperature, soil moisture and other data needed to support end-user needs;
• Prepare Meta data ( Data about Data)
• Incorporate Geodatabases developed through Projects from NBI centers into one central Geodatabase
• Advocate and ensure compliance to data and mapping standards
• Work closely with thematic specialists (water resources, environment, socio-economic development) at the Nile-Sec to identify needs for spatial data/information to support basin wide water resources management efforts; interpret these spatial information needs such as identification of needs for satellite imageries, GIS layers, processing and map production needs:
• Generation of time series data from gridded spatial data for areas of interest as requested by Water Resources Modeller
• Perform cartographic editing to generate customised data as required by WRM
• Generation of project specific databases
• Develop thematic maps products to communicate results of strategic analysis Dissemination and Provision of data to NBI centers as required by consultants to undertake studies and any other NBI stakeholders
• Plan and execute the processing of digital imagery and GIS information layers using specialized image processing software such as ERDAS Imagine, ARcGIS, NB DSS GIS tools or similar software
• Support Nile-SEC communication functions to Design, develop and produce thematic maps to communicate with decision makers and wider public on critical issues and provide facts about the Nile Basin for NBI corporate documents
• Work with Relevant staff in the development of Knowledge products such as Posters, Flyers, messages, brochures, Newsletter articles, Website Articles and other relevant documentation to market activities of NBI. This includes organising exhibition to market NBI products during regional meetings for NBI governance and donors
• Work closely with the NBI IT/KM team maintain the NBI web-site, ensure consistency of project websites and carry out periodic reviews to improve navigation, feel and look of the website, and ensure proper updates of the website in the official languages of NBI.
• Contribute towards Collection and Collating of spatial (GIS) and statistical data from Global datasets relevant to the State of Basin report
• Preparation of well presented standard charts as is required in the outstanding list of illustrations for the SoB.
• Spatial analysis of the data collected, including interpretation of any available up-to-date digital satellite images. Initially, the priority is to Begin preprocessing and compiling satellite imagery like RFE.2.0 dataset , MODIS and others as required for the SoB and Atlas.
• Begin to quantify the processes working across the Nile Basin, linking water access and use, and environmental degradation to get an understanding of the driving forces of change, specific pressures on resources, and locate areas undergoing most serious degradation.

Required education: Post-graduate education
Required relevant work experience: 7 years
Required languages: English (Spoken: fluent | Written: fluent)
