Job Summary

The HLC is our legal guy who will oversee, establish, and inform company policies regarding regulators in Africa specifically. The HLC is responsible for providing full scope legal advice and ensuring that the business meets its regulatory obligations while promoting and sustaining a culture of compliance, transparency and integrity.


Reporting to the Managing Director, the job holder will be responsible for:

  • Developing, implementing and coordinating the organization’s legal, risk and compliance frameworks consistent with the organization’s strategy;
  • Reviewing the legislation and regulatory requirements and advising the business on any changes in the compliance requirements. Ensuring that the organization complies with statutory requirements, rules and regulations set and revised from time to time by relevant regulatory bodies;
  • Developing and monitoring appropriate policies, processes and controls in respect of key areas of legal, regulatory and ethical obligation.
  • Developing and implementing appropriate risk assessment frameworks to be used as a guide in identifying risk;
  • Making recommendations and contributing to the improvement of the internal control and operational environment based on the risk reviews within the context of Chipper Cash and taking into account the overall business environment and trends;
  • Identifying potential areas of compliance vulnerability and risk; developing/implementing corrective action plans for resolution of problematic issues and provides general guidance on how to avoid or deal with similar situations in the future;
  • Advising, giving direction and guidance, and follow-up to ensure appropriate treatment actions on for high risk transactions as per AML/KYC/Sanctions policies;
  • Providing full scope legal support and input to the business taking into account legal risk and the need to overcome legal obstacles;
  • Ensuring that all documentations are legally sound and meet business needs;
  • Providing reports on a regular basis, and as directed or requested by Management, to keep the leadership informed of the operation and progress of compliance activities;
  • Conducting staff training; both introductory for new employees and ongoing for all employees, to ensure an understanding of new and existing compliance issues and related policies and procedures;
  • Establishing systems to attract, develop, engage, and retain talented individuals and create an environment where they can realize their full potential and contribute to the attainment of functional and organizational goals.

What we are looking for in you
  • Bachelor of Law Degree (LLB);
  • A Member of the Law Society of Kenya;
  • Professional certification in Compliance from a recognized institution;
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience, two (2) of which should be in a compliance function;
  • Working knowledge of regulatory environment;
  • Knowledge of financial technology, commercial banking and retail banking in East Africa;
  • In-depth knowledge of governance, risk, and compliance systems and how to design and implement a governance risk and compliance framework;
  • Must possess coaching and mentorship skills to support professional development goals of juniors under them;
  • Role holder must have incredible work ethic understanding that flexibility and drive underlies the success of a startup.
