Job Summary

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.

Urban Planning & Design Branch (UPDB) of UN-Habitat supports countries in developing urban planning methods and systems that address current urbanization challenges. It promotes urban planning and environmental management approaches to address climate change mitigation and adaptation in urban areas, as well as urban biodiversity, urban mobility and energy in the context of sustainable urban development. In order to provide guidance on planning and policy at the regional, metropolitan and national scales, the Regional and Metropolitan Planning Unit (RMPU) conducts activities in knowledge management, tools development, capacity building, policy dialogue, and advisory services in three areas of expertise: National Urban Policies, International Guidelines on Urban and Territorial Planning as well as Regional and Metropolitan Planning.

In order to facilitate the design related packaging of RMPU outputs, the Graphic Design Intern will primarily assist with the graphic design of RMPU products and also remain flexible to assist in other thematic areas as circumstances require. The intern should be proficient in using graphic design software namely InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop in order to assist with the development of layouts and infographics for Unit publications. A familiarity with website design and programming/coding is not mandatory but would be an asset as the intern may be allowed to participate in the construction of the RMPU website or relevant webpages dedicated to one or more RMPU projects. Skills in mapping, hand-drawing and video making will also be an advantage for the facilitation of current regional and metropolitan planning projects. Knowledge of a second United Nations Official Language is an asset.

The UN-HABITAT Regional and Metropolitan Planning Unit (RMPU), Urban Planning and Design Branch (UPDB)internship is for 3-6 months.



Responsibilities

•Support RMPU with advocacy and outreach efforts through the design and packaging of publications and promotional materials. The intern will also support the development and design of promotional materials for the main themes of the Unit and the current major projects and support the Unit in managing its publication development and stock lists. He/she may need also to liaise with external/internal partners in relation to publications;
•Contribute to the overall knowledge management activities and advocacy activities of RMPU, including information material and publication layout with design software (InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop);
•Assist with the design, layout and management of the printing and delivery of a range of visual materials (PPT, publications/books, reports, flyers, information materials, technical drawing, concept designs);
•In conjunction with Unit members, assist with developing user-friendly and easily accessible RMPU materials, including Unit promotional materials and thematic materials;
•Assist with the design and maintenance of RMPU programs, projects and activities on websites and/or website pages dedicated to one or more RMPU projects. Provide support for the programming of websites, if possible. The incumbent could be required to aid in designing, administering and continuously updating RMPU website(s) in consultation with UN-Habitat communication branch and in respect to UN rules and regulations. The tasks could also require research of other web hosting sites to identify the optimized option in terms of lay-out, user-friendliness interface and cost.
•Liaise with the Advocacy, Communication and Outreach Branch (UN-Habitat’s communication branch) to ensure compliance with publications policy and design and all RMPU online publications are up-to-date;
•Design websites for the Unit, if possible;
•Assist in mapping projects on metropolitan/regional level, if possible;
•Assist in mapping and design through hand-drawing, if possible;
•Media production through video making, if possible;
•Providing support to RMPU efforts networking and advocacy in line with the Agency’s guidelines;
•Undertake additional tasks related to design, illustrations and graphical representations of concepts, as circumstances may require. The intern may also be expected to perform other related duties in support of the RMPU, UPDB and UN-Habitat as required, and as jointly determined by RMPU team.
