Job Summary

The Legal Services Officer will support the Legal Services Manager in systematizing the support
provided by the students in the prisons and remand homes in Kenya where our students and/or
paralegals are located. This initiative will be very much student/paralegal centered. You will be
tasked with direct supervision of our Legal Advice Clinics in prisons and quality assurance of
cases that are being handled by our students/paralegals.
Qualifications and Competencies

  1. A Bachelor degree in law
  2. Law practitioner with 2 years practical experience and knowledge of criminal justice procedures and remedies
  3. In-depth understanding of the Kenyan Justice System.
  4. Experience in Criminal Litigation
  5. Experience of project management, including setting up and management of various programmes in similar situations e.g. prisons, judiciary, or drop-in clinics is desirable.
  6. Advanced oral and writing skills, and an ability to create documents including manuals and presentations; excellent interpersonal skills; IT skills appropriate.
  7. In depth knowledge of project reporting and collecting Monitoring and Evaluating of data.
  8. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  9. Demonstrable management and organizational skills.
  10. Strong analytical skills
  11. Willingness to reside in Naivasha and travel to Nairobi frequently


Key Responsibilities

  1. The Legal Aid will be responsible for assisting in carrying out the structures required for the smooth operation of Drop-in-Legal Advice Clinics in Naivasha Maximum and Medium Prisons, and ensuring efficient operation and timely implementation of various planned activities, and fulfill the necessary management requirements of the clinics in Naivasha Medium and Maximum Prisons.
  2. Lead on the filing and follow up of cases particularly appeal cases, to ensure timely outcomes. Support the research on relevant cases and other supporting authorities/material required to enable the provision of quality advice within the clinics in Naivasha Maximum and Medium Prisons.
  3. Responsible for ensuring that standards and quality of paralegal delivery is developed and maintained. This include case management, review of court documents drafted by paralegals and continuous capacity building of the paralegals.
  4. The Legal Services Officer is responsible for supporting in the implementation of the charities strategic paralegal initiatives around our Drop-in-Legal Advice clinics. This includes project management, monitoring and evaluation, advocacy and report writing.
  5. Identify and co-ordinate with the new developments, such as those relating to the clinics, models of delivery and partnership working, through regular review and investigation of new opportunities.
  6. He/she will engage in appropriate committees, working groups and other activities to maintain strong and productive external networks, this will include Naivasha Court Users Committee.
  7. Ensure best practice procedures and processes; and internal requirements and regulations on how the Drop-in Legal Advice Clinic will operate. This will also include development and implementation of relevant policies and relevant documents to guide the operation of the Legal Advice Clinics in Naivasha.  Support the Legal Services Manager in creating training materials and manuals and help to conduct necessary trainings and workshops required for the efficient and effective implementation of activities in the Legal Advice Clinic. He/she will be required to carry out the trainings.
  8. Support in the carrying out of research to understand the current situation including; the prevailing challenges in accessing justice in the project sites; recommend changes and improvements, work with key influencers in the prison service and in the community to inform the design of relevant interventions to address identified gaps.
  9. Any other duties as reasonably requested by the Legal Services Director and other project staff.
