Company Overview:

Acacia Innovations Ltd. is a fast-growing startup which provides environmentally friendly and cost-saving cooking and fuel solutions for schools and small businesses. We manufacture and distribute Kuni Safi briquettes, a nearly smokeless alternative to firewood made from sugarcane waste, as well as institutional energy saving cookstoves. We are the largest supplier of clean cooking fuels to schools in Kenya, with 250+ school customers. We are internationally recognized as a Winner of the Start-Up Energy Transition Award sponsored by the German Government and as a recipient of Energy and Environment Project grant from the Nordic Development Fund.

Job Description:

We are seeking a high energy and experienced professional to fill a key new role in our leadership team overseeing our growing production and logistics across Kenya. The ideal candidate will have a technical background and a proven track record of increasing production efficiency and output as well as managing logistics. You should be comfortable sweating the details to make sure that everything gets done, and passionate about process improvement. Your role will involve ownership of a large share of company operations, including overseeing the production team at our factory in rural Bungoma, as well as logistics activities in Nairobi and our new field offices in Eldoret, Nakuru, and Machakos. You will also serve as Project Manager overseeing an aggressive scale-up project funded by Energy & Environment Partnership.

Location: Milimani, Nairobi; 25-50% of time at factory in Bungoma County & field offices

Reports to: Founder & CEO


1. Increase production output and efficiency

  • Supervise and support the Production Manager at our Bungoma factory to effectively manage the production team of 60+ staff (anticipated to double in the next 2 years)
  • Take responsibility for meeting daily, weekly, and monthly production goals
  • Design and implement new protocols and processes to increase production of briquettes, reduce waste, and lower the cost of production
  • Improve quality standards and implement quality assurance checks
  • Oversee procurement of spare parts and contractors to repair and maintain machinery and factory facilities
  • Develop accurate budgets and cost forecasts
2. Oversee production scale-up
  • Manage the procurement and importation of new machinery
  • Oversee installation of new machinery and construction of new facilities at factory site
  • Supervise the set-up of a new workshop to produce cookstoves
  • Look for potential sites for second factory and oversee construction of second factory site in early 2020
3. Oversee delivery logistics
  • Manage our logistics team, including an Operations Coordinator based in the Nairobi office and Branch Operations Manager at our three new branches, who will be responsible for coordinating customer deliveries and restocking local stores
  • Form partnerships with shipping and logistics companies and negotiate better rates
  • Design and implement protocols and processes to improve customer delivery time and accuracy
4. Manage Energy and Environment project deliverables
  • Serve as the Project Manager for keeping the company on track to meet the deliverables proposed under the scale-up project funded by Energy and Environment Partnership
  • Keep track of metrics for project deliverables and assist in reporting requirements for Energy and Environment Project grant

Qualifications Required:
  • 5-7+ years’ experience in management in manufacturing or logistics sector
  • Conversant in heavy industrial machinery and parts and capable of assessing repairs and maintenance required, with support from Production Manager
  • Experience in supervising and motivating teams
  • Creative and motivated by solving problems

Preferred but not required:
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field
  • Experience in biomass, briquettes, or cookstoves sector
