Job Summary

Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, security, conflict resolution or related area is required.Experience in political analysis and advice to senior officials is required.Experience in diplomacy as well as supporting good offices or political mediation processes required.Experience working in or on a regional context, especially the Great Lakes region of Africa, is required.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in both English and French is required. (Oral and Written).


  1. Participates as a team member in a team which deals with a variety of political issues in a region and/ or country or major conflict.
  2. Gathers, selects and analyses the political, security, humanitarian and human rights situation in assigned countries, including relations between countries, relevant parties within those countries, regional organizations and other key stakeholders, with a view to providing timely and relevant analytical forward-looking assessments and strategic recommendations to senior management, in line with the office’s mandate. Identifies and monitors emerging issues pertaining to the mandates of the Team; analyses implications and makes recommendations on possible strategies and measures.
  3. Prepares a wide range of documents, including briefing notes, talking points, reports and other correspondence, for the Head of the Mission and other senior staff.
  4. Participates in fact-finding, planning and other missions to countries within the assigned area of responsibility and drafts reports thereon.
  5. Represents the team in meetings, round tables, seminars and conferences.
  6. Assists in planning, coordinating and managing programmes, projects and activities requiring interdepartmental and/or inter-agency involvement and participation.
  7. Coordinates activities related to the programme of work, budget and medium-term plan of the team and participates in administrative matters concerning the team; assists in coordinating work of colleagues and unit.
  8. Maintains and develops contact with government officials, regional and international partners, as appropriate.
  9. Performs other related duties as required.
