Potato is the second most important staple food crop after maize and
an important income source for about
800,000 farmers in Kenya. Moreover, the market for potatoes is increasingly
diversifying and offers opportunities
for value creation/addition and income generation in local supply chains. Its
high yields, relatively short growth
cycles (90-120 days) and its nutritional properties
make it important for food and nutrition security in Kenya and Uganda. The German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development
(BMZ) has recognized those challenges and potentials
and established the Special Unit “One world without hunger”.In this context, BMZ has commissioned the Deutsche Gesellschaft für
Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ)
GmbH to implement the Global Programme“Promotion of nutrition-sensitive potato value chains in East Africa” in Kenya and
Uganda. It aims at supporting smallholder farmers to increase their potato yields and to
improve the nutrition diversity of food-insecure people. The Programme in Kenya
