Job Summary

Education
  • PhD. in a relevant discipline associated with agriculture and food security such as agronomy, agricultural economics, agricultural engineering, social sciences, climate change, food sciences or nutrition, gender, and a record of related research and publication in a developing region of the world. Candidates with a Master’s degree and ten to twelve years of professional experience in a relevant domain may be considered in lieu of a PhD.
Experience
Minimum of eight years relevant experience in the area of agriculture or food systems or food security in:
  • Managing research, including technical and financial aspects, monitoring and evaluation of research performance, and reporting and/or experience in leading and conducting research projects involving multiple stakeholders;
  • Demonstrating leadership in advancing and supporting gender transformative programming in applied research;
  • Communicating research and research results to professional, expert and non-expert audiences and developing and maintain collaborative relationships with a range of different stakeholders;
  • Supporting governments and partners in strategic design and implementation of technical support to develop and implement large scale multi-stakeholders programmes;
  • Assessing capacity development needs and developing capacity strengthening programmes, through mentoring, supervision, and brokering expert support;
  • Establishing and building partnerships with development organizations including multilaterals, research organizations, funding agencies, and end users;
  • Working and building bridges between researchers, decision-makers and policy actors to influence public policy and practice;
  • Representing the organization at national and international fora.
Note: Candidates with at least 5 years of experience and who meet the relevant education requirements may be considered and appointed at the Senior Program Officer level M ($ 94,980 – $117,580)

Language
  • Advanced English language skills (French is an asset)

Responsibilities

Specifically, the successful candidate will be responsible for:
  • Contributing intellectually and strategically to program development and implementation: Identify critical research issues, researchers and strategic partners related to policy research and agriculture and food security innovations; develop projects according the program strategy; provide technical advice and guidance; contribute to program performance measurement systems;
  • Facilitating program learning and synthesis across projects: Work with research grantees and, where applicable, external advisors, to strengthen methodologies and analytical skills; forge linkages with other research programs; and encourage and support dissemination of research findings;
  • Monitoring project performance: Provide feedback, guidance, and information to recipients to improve performance and enhance the uptake and application of research findings, including when necessary, identifying additional expertise to support the project or program;   
  • Promoting research quality and scientific merit: Provide quality assurance at all stages of the research; attention to research ethics; provide intellectual leadership to foster deeper understanding and interpretation of evidence;
  • Supporting research uptake for impact at scale: Develop knowledge of relevant national and international policy debates and processes; support strategies and approaches designed to facilitate the development of policies and innovations with impact on population; 
  • Developing strategic relationships and partnerships: With the support of management, develop concepts for potential program development through donor partnerships; contribute to partnership development, negotiation, administration and reporting; 
  • Professional representation: Represent IDRC in a wide range of audiences and venues; promote the activities and results of the program to appropriate audiences.
