Qualification (Minimum)  


  • University degree in Engineering or Procurement/Supply Chain Management with 5 years’ experience with 3 years’ experience in material management.
  • Strong IT systems knowledge and skills including advanced Excel skills.
  • Experience of working in a material cost control role and supervising the smooth supply of materials in line with maintenance requirements and budget, ideally within aviation or manufacturing.
  • Experience in contract management and knowledge of inventory management.
  • Aircrafts systems or Familiarization course.
  • Advanced understanding of materials management data and systems.
  • Knowledge of aircraft components/parts.
  • Ability to read, understand & interpret approved maintenance documentation e.g. IPC, RSPL, AMM, SBs etc.
  • Knowledge of lean techniques.
  • Knowledge of aircraft parts airworthiness certification (EASA, FAA) KCAA and customs regulations relevant to aircraft parts desirable good understanding of IAT resolutions and industry rules.
  • Membership of an appropriate professional body.
  • 5 years’ experience in Material Management.

Component Repair is concerned with ensuring components sent toexternal suppliers are repaired at an optimized cost, optimized turnaround timeand at the same time achieving best quality. The main factors in componentrepair decision making process are:

  • Value Engineering/Analysis – Review of ALL supplier repair quotes and challenging/recommending as necessary.
  • TAT – Ensuring components turnaround from shop is shortest possible. TAT target -45days.
  • Component Loss >Failure to follow up on repair unit return-Tracking ALL orders regularly.
  • Excess Purchase/Stock> Lack of data on outstanding repair orders.
  • Contract-Understanding and observing repair orders purchase contract terms.
  • Monitor, track and control component repair management cycle.
  • Analyzing and reviewing the requisite materials data guiding short and medium term.

Strategyand Development

  • Implement Material Management vision, strategy, policies, processes and procedures to aid and improve operational performance.
  • Perform data analysis to guide decisions on materials repairs strategy.

ComponentsRepairs Management

  • Manage component life cycle through component repair management.
  • Track and manage all repair components to ensure timely redelivery of core units from suppliers.
  • Monitor ALL repair orders, prioritize units required with short TATs, High Cost, with supply chain team for timely return of core units at optimum cost to the business.
  • Evaluating existing analytics and operational reports for performance improvement.
  • Propose solutions and implement corrective actions to the root causes in KPI(long TATs, cost, loss).
  • Compliance to health and safety culture within the working group and the training needs and areas that need development for the team members.
  • Ensuring compliance to all relevant internal policies, procedures and controls across the operations.
  • Review invoices and validate charges for repairs services provided against expectation for approval before payment.

PeopleManagement

  • Supervise, coach and develop a high performing team that meets agreed objectives, and which delivers best practice results, added value and continuous improvements.
  • Set sectional objectives/KPIs, review and assess ongoing performance of direct reports.
  • Monitor and ensure that staff under supervision maintain accurate material data to optimize inventory.
  • Ensure that the function operates in accordance with any health, safety and environmental policies and procedures to ensure the safety and wellbeing of self, staff and visitors.

Relationship Management

  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to manage and control component movement from unserviceable unit removal, repair order creation, delivery to shops and redelivery of serviceable unit for consumption by business at optimal cost.
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with internal and external customers, regulatory bodies and supplier that results in timely spares delivery for KQ and third-party customer satisfaction.
  • Work with cross functional teams to deliver effective solutions.
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders on repair components requests and review same and update regularly and timely on any deviations.
  • Support new business initiatives and projects. Contribute to review meetings and change process. Ensure subsequent effective inventory management implementation takes place.
  • Contribute to supplier meetings and negotiations to ensure material management requirements are met.
  • Work with stakeholders in resolving supplier concerns and evaluate supplier performance in conjunction with members of the supply chain.
  • Work closely with the purchasing team to ensure purchasing strategies are maximized.

Budget & Reporting

  • Develop budgets and forecasts for component repair costs based on historical data, market trends, and anticipated demand for repair services. This involves projecting future expenses and allocating resources accordingly.
  • Prepare management reports to support decisions on a regular basis.

Vendor Management

  • The Material Costs Controller works closely with vendors, supplier’s procurement team to negotiate pricing for materials and components sent for repairs. They seek competitive pricing, quality assurance, and timely delivery from suppliers to optimize cost-effectiveness.

Process Development & Improvement

  • The Material Costs Controller actively seeks opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance cost-effectiveness in the component repair process. They participate in cross-functional teams, process improvement initiatives, and training programs to drive continuous improvement efforts.
  • Liaise with material planning to continuously implement the aircraft materials provisioning policy to ensure timely delivery of aircraft parts for Kenya Airways.
  • Participate in continuous process improvement initiatives for Inventory Management.

Safety and Training

  • Ensure a health and safety culture is embraced within the working environment.
  • Ensure Compliance with Material Management Procedures.
  • They ensure compliance with relevant regulations, industry standards, and contractual agreements governing component repair operations. This includes adherence to safety regulations, environmental requirements, and legal obligations related to sourcing and disposal of materials.
