About SPARK:

GIZ implements the new regional project 'SPARK' which aims at strengthening African technology ecosystems for gender-responsive, climate-smart and research-based innovation on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

With a strong focus on gender and climate priorities, the project reinforces the link between applied research and entrepreneurship. While the project has roots in pan-African Startup and
Tech-Ecosystem Support focus areas are:

  • improving capacities of research actors to apply their research for entrepreneurship ·
    boost cooperation with innovation ecosystem actors

  • offer ventures more fit-for-purpose financing opportunities


The project has a pan-African scope, and the teams will initially operate out of Nairobi, Kenya and GIZ HQ in Germany.


Position Overview:

SPARK is seeking a dedicated and motivated Advisor to support our pan African team based in Kenya in setting up the project, building up a collaboration with selected innovation enablers and investors/financiers in the ecosystems. Your main task will be to co-create a diversified financing models with our partners that are purpose fit to be gender-responsive and address the need to climate solutions. This will require a solid understanding about investments and a wide network in the space.

Additionally, collaborate closely with other bilateral, regional and global GIZ projects in the Cluster or beyond to co-create viable ideas benefitting over-all objectives and implementation.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Design and Co-create the Project’s implementation for Anglophone Africa


2. Implement the Project

  • Designing, planning, executing, and reviewing activities and programs along identified needs and in close alignment with other intervention areas
  • Deliver direct advisory to project beneficiaries
  • Drawing project budgets, support in raising funding, implementation - and contract-management
  • Building a database of sectorial communities to guide strategic decisions
  • Developing an engagement strategy for the ecosystem actors with a focus on the overall ecosystem including i.e. (angel) investment networks, ecosystem partnerships, academia, to create buy-in and accountability


3. Build and Collaborate

  • Improve awareness of the ecosystem’s potential as well as leverage this potential
    to showcase and amplify the work of ecosystem actors
  • Event management and creation: identify regional events with co-creation
    potential, create and organize own events, plan and implement
    interventions at the events
  • Establish and manage new cooperation formats (‘exposure projects’) between European and African Investors and other Financial Service Providers
  • Develop cooperations with other relevant GIZ projects in the region to leverage
    synergies
  • Establish close exchange formats with relevant Digital Transformation Centres and Digital Innovation Hubs (AEDIB) and other relevant projects
  • Drafting of reports and statements


Qualification and Requirements

  • We would love to get to know you if you are a strong team player but at the same time have a strong track record of self-motivation, giving creative impulses, and implementing them, learning new topics quickly and comprehensively
  • You have a University degree in economics, business, investment banking or a similar field
  • At least 5 years of professional experience in the field of start-up promotion, Startup investment VC or investment banking, Innovation Management, and cooperation with the financial sector in the region
  • Ideally working experience with an extensive network and exposure in Angel Investment, VC or Climate Financing
  • Extensive knowledge of the anglophone digital start-up eco-systems
  • Excellent organizational and coordination skills and are a keen collaborator
  • Good writing and communication skills and an interest in Research and Gender aspects of Innovation
  • You are very flexible, pay attention to detail and excel in a fast-paced environment
  • Business fluency in English is vital. 
  • Knowledge of German and French would be an advantage

Timing and Duration of Assignment
