We are a friendly, stable and caring community, proud of our academic and co-curricular achievements and dedicated to bringing out the full potential of each of our Key Stage 3-5 pupils. The Institution has a strong reputation as an academic school and we are committed to day and boarding, with school transport offered for day scholars. We offer a stimulating range of co-curricular activities which take place in the evenings and throughout the weekend.

A termly boarding school. Around 240 of our pupils are full termly boarders and the remainder are day scholars. All staff contribute to the boarding life of the school.

The Appointment.

The appointment is for September 2024.


The Deputy Head is directly responsible to the School Principal and to the Board of Directors. Her responsibilities will cover the organisation, management, health, welfare and discipline of all the pupils and with emphasis laid on the boarding side of the school. The Deputy Head is responsible for all areas of school life that are concerned with boarding arrangements, boarding activities and weekends.


The Deputy Head is an integral member of the Senior Management Team who will share responsibility for whole school issues. The Senior Management Team consists of the Principal, the Academic dean, the dorm masters and mistresses, faculty heads, and the Director of Co-Curricular.


The following staff report directly to the Deputy Head:

1. Senior Boarding Master/Mistress (who, in turn, manages the boarding team)

2. The Heads of House are teaching staff and they all live on site

3. Nurse/clinical officer

4. All non-teaching staff

5. Head of Kitchens

6. All others as delegated by the Principal


Person Specification
The successful candidate will have energy, commitment, strong inter-personal, organisational and management skills, sound judgement, discretion, a sense of humour and cheerfulness! S/he must have a genuine interest in and liking for pupils, and be able to plan and to be part of a team. Strong writing and ICT skills, such as use of e-mail, word processing, Excel and Power Point are essential. The successful candidate will be willing to be flexible and willing to undertake any task within reason that is given to her by the Principal. This means that her job description may change and adapt as the needs of the school change. S/he must be able to command the respect and support of the Directors, staff, pupils and parents.

The Deputy Head is a member of the Senior Management Team and is directly responsible to the Principal. S/he is responsible for all areas of school life that are concerned with pastoral care, boarding arrangements, boarding activities and weekends.


The general and particular duties of the Deputy Head are:

  • to assist and advise the Principal on all matters relating to Discipline, pastoral care and boarding, kitchens, school compound;

  • to deputise for the Principal in their absence and on all occasions as directed by the Principal;

  • to be responsible for the leadership, management, induction, appraisal and professional development of the Heads of House and to:

1. be available to them on a daily basis regarding any aspect of the pastoral care of pupils

2. assist with their appointment;

  • to give up-to-date INSET on a termly basis on safeguarding and pastoral issues to teaching, residential and support staff;

  • to keep abreast of developments in boarding nationally and to develop a detailed knowledge of initiatives and regulations;

  • to deal with all legislative matters pertaining to boarding schools including the National Minimum Standards;

  • to have particular responsibility for preparing the school for boarding inspections including the paperwork required and the follow up of any recommendations or advice;

  • to assist the Principal, Finance Office and Directors with any delegated aspects of major projects such as building projects, design, submission of planning permission, and contingency plans during major builds;

  • to be a member of the ICT steering committee and to have special responsibility for advising staff, pupils and parents on all aspects of safe and appropriate use of ICT including mobile phones, websites and on-line reputation. This will involve keeping very up-to-date with the rapidly evolving world of technology and the way in which teenagers are using it, and working closely with the ICT teacher;

  • each term to allocate sleeping accommodation for all pupils in a rational and fair manner and to keep ongoing records of each pupil's sleeping accommodation and special requests from Heads of House so that every term begins in a calm and orderly way;

  • to be responsible for the leadership, management, induction, appraisal and professional development of the Senior Boarding Teachers;

  • to line manage the Clinic Staff

  • to be available for discussion and meetings with staff, pupils and parents on a very regular basis;

  • to be a regular presence in all of the boarding areas and Common Rooms in the early mornings, evenings and at weekends;

  • to oversee special permissions from parents for absences from school;

  • to oversee the organisation and issuing of the staff duty rota for each week

  • to oversee and direct all of the responsibilities of the Boarding Teachers, for example, her management of the morning and evening work of the Residential Staff and Evening Boarding Assistants, bedtime routines, rotas, planning and detail of weekend social events with other schools, communication with the Housekeepers on all relevant matters concerning domestic responsibilities, cleanliness and tidiness;

  • to undertake morning wake up and evening bedtime duties in the absence of other staff or during induction of new staff, or at other appropriate or useful times;

  • to develop short, medium and long term plans for the ongoing refurbishment of common rooms and sleeping accommodation in conjunction with the Principal

  • to teach a reduced timetable;

  • to take Sunday Church Service on a regular basis;

  • to chair the pastoral group and the weekly meeting of the residential staff and to attend the following meetings: SMT, Heads of House, Heads of Department, Curriculum Committee, Year-Coordinators, ICT Steering, Curriculum and Pastoral Committee, and any other meeting as required;

  • to hold regular meetings with the Senior Boarding Teachers, the Catering Manager, grounds staff, the Heads of House and the Clinical Officer;

  • to be responsible for all school uniform and dress regulations;

  • to assist the Principal in the organisation of all major school functions, such as Open Day; Prize-giving Day, Prayer Day, Visiting Days, Opening and Closing Days

  • to ensure the smooth running of the pupils' dining hall by overseeing the supervision arrangements for all mealtimes (with the Dining Hall master/mistress) and establishing good pupil discipline in the D/H and in queues;

  • to ensure that a full and balanced diet is provided for pupils through liaison with the Head of Kitchens and Nurse and through observation and monitoring at mealtimes;

  • to oversee guardianship and travel arrangements for overseas pupils;

  • to recommend and contact external speakers for Sunday services, Student Mentorship days, parents meetings and staff INSET, working with the Heads of Faculty, Head of Extra-Curricular and Academic Dean

  • to oversee the Skills for Life (PSHE) programme, managing the teacher in charge of Skills for Life;

  • to manage any budget with respect to pastoral care as directed by the Principal;

  • to perform other duties as reasonably required by the Principal.


General duties:

  • To attend the annual Open Day, prospective parent days and any other out-of-school social function as required by the Principal.

  • To attend six full days of INSET per year at the beginning of terms.

  • To attend Senior Management INSET for 2 ½ days at the end of November.


A residential post:

It is an essential requirement of the post that the Deputy Head should be resident on the main school site. The Deputy Head will be expected to be present at all school functions including Church service on Sunday.
