Since 2009, the Civil Peace Service Programme of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmBH (GIZ CPS) deploys international and national Peace Building Advisors to strengthen the capacities of non-government and governmental organizations in the field of conflict sensitivity and non-violent conflict transformation. Our concepts for transforming violent
conflicts in the context of socio-economic inequalities are community dialogue processes, peace journalism, the support of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms. The programme also integrates mental health and psycho-social support component that includes staff care for our partner organizations. GIZ CPS works with inclusive and participatory approaches.

Since 2014, CPS also implements a special initiative Programme on Migration and Conflict Management (CPS SIF). It focuses on reconciliation between Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs)/refugees and host communities, strengthening cooperation between migrants / host communities and the local government, as well as advocacy and legal awareness raising. A new additional component under the CPS SIF is also mental health and psychosocial support.

Reporting to the Deputy Programme Coordinator of Admin and Finance (GIZ Civil Peace Service), he/she will carry out the following:


A. Responsibilities

The Driver is responsible for:

  • Safely and responsibly performing all official travel using programme vehicles
  • Regularly taking programme cars for service and looking after programme vehicles
  • Taking account of all available information on road conditions, accessible routes and locations
  • Deliver and collects documents from the country office, partner offices etc.

B. Tasks

The Driver will perform the following:

Driving

  • Transport colleagues to meetings/workshops venues within and outside Nairobi when need arises

  • Running official errands and assisting with other office work as may be assigned by the administrative and the coordination team

  • Helps with transporting goods when required

  • Completes the vehicle log correctly and conscientiously in accordance with GIZ rules and regulations

Service

  • Follow up on vehicle servicing with respective service center.

  • Keep the maintenance / service record (job cards) of all project vehicles for ease of reference and trouble shooting.

  • Checks oil, water, brakes and brake liquid, tyre pressure, battery levels and the entire vehicle, monthly or every 5,000 km (whichever is first), headlights, brakes, bodywork for dents etc.
  • Responsible for the project vehicle documents and their good condition, keeping a vehicle log and recording monthly maintenance
  • Calculates monthly fuel, oil and lubricant consumption for the daily cash fund and for forwarding monthly vouchers to cost accounting
  • Reports need for service and carries out minor repairs
  • Immediately reports all involvement of the project or office vehicle in accidents, including minor accidents, damage, loss, or theft of vehicle fittings.
  • Cleans the interior and exterior of the vehicle(s) regularly.


Knowledge Management

  • Uses all available information (including current radio news on traffic conditions) to update daily knowledge of road conditions, current passable routes and locations, and shares this information with colleagues

Additional Tasks

  • Assist Finance and admin component with scanning, photocopying, and filing of documents
  • Assist implementing advisors in payment of transport allowance in the field and consolidation of admin and finance document i.e., service provider invoices, participant list etc.

C. Profile

Qualifications

  • Secondary school education
  • Holds a valid driver’s license
  • Basic vehicle mechanic training.

Professional experience

  • At least 3 years work experience as a driver

  • No major accidents in the past 3 years

Other knowledge, additional competence

  • Good knowledge of English and Kiswahili

  • Disciplined and punctual

  • Resilient and patient

  • Familiar with routes in Nairobi and other parts of the Country

  • Willingness to upskill as required by the tasks to be performed – corresponding measures are agreed with coordination team
