As a federally owned enterprise, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH supports the German Government in achieving its objectives in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development.
The Energy, Transport and Climate Change (ETCC) Programme consists of the following Projects among other Global Projects::
Energising Development (EnDev) is a global programme financed by Germany, the Netherlands through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (DGIS), Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. It is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. The objective of EnDev Kenya is to accelerate access to clean energy for the rural population, with fuel-saving cook stoves and small solar systems
The Project Development Programme (PDP), commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) as part of the ‘Renewables – Made in Germany’ initiative, provides ongoing assistance for German companies from the renewable energy sector when tapping into new markets or developing pilot projects. It supports the cooperation between international and local companies, promotes sustainable market structures and the use of renewable energy.
The project “Promotion of Grid Connected Variable Renewable Energies” (vRE) is implemented by GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The project is part of the German Climate Technology Initiative (DKTI) and promotes the dissemination of technologies in emerging and developing countries with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Implementing agencies for the DKTI are both GIZ for technical and KFW for financial assistance. The project’s objective is to improve the preconditions for the system-friendly and cost-efficient integration of variable renewable energies in the Kenyan electricity grid. The project will further seek to strengthen the vRE-specific competencies at the Ministry of Energy (MoE), which acts as the political lead
executing agency and implementation partner, at the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), as well as within other public and private implementing partners in four central spheres of activity: 1) energy policies, 2) energy planning, 3) regulation, and 4) operations. The partners will be trained on understanding the systems of proven international concepts surrounding vRE
integration, enabling them to confidently analyze their application, and ultimately apply their knowledge to the Kenyan context with the aim to adapt sector conditions.
The project “Promotion of electric mobility in Kenya” aims to support the partners in developing the enabling framework conditions and a market development to promote urban and rural electric mobility applications. It will operate based on three key broader areas of intervention; a) Development of strategies, regulations and standards; b) Training, knowledge sharing and stakeholder coordination; c) Support for pilot applications and dissemination. A key partner for the project will be the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing, Urban Development and Public Works.
NDC Assist II aims to improve capacities for financing and incentivizing the implementation of NDCs (accessing, mobilizing and effectively using resources from various financing sources,
establishment of incentives, budget tracking and mainstreaming etc.) in selected partner countries and regions. The project is commissioned as a contribution by BMZ to the NDC Partnership.
The first phase of NDC Assist (01/2018-12/2020) supported selected NDCP member countries in their broader capacity to steer and implement the then newly established NDCs. The follow-up project (NDC Assist II) is focusing on improving capacities for NDC financing and implementation at the public and private level, always with a view to gender equality..
The Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa (CoM SSA) initiative supports Sub-Saharan African cities in their fight against climate change and in their efforts to ensure access to clean energy. The operational objective of GIZ’s CoMSSA Phase III activities in Kenya is to support SEACAP development, capacity building and supporting climate related investments
GIZ has partnered with UNHCR to implement a project on Energy Supply in displacement Settings (ESDS) in Turkana County/Turkana West Subcounty. The implementation approach will focus on two levels: 1) policy, capacity development and coordination, 2) high tier electricity to supply refugees, host communities and institutions, e.g. UNHCR infrastructure. The implementation approach will be aligned to the underlying principles of the CRRF and the
KISEDP.
The project "Promotion of Climate-Friendly Cooking: Kenya and Senegal" builds on Energising Development (EnDev), the joint impact-oriented global partnership between Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Sweden that is implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and co-managed with the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO.nl). EnDev promotes sustainable access to modern energy products and services that are affordable, meet the needs of the
poor, and create positive economic, social and environmental impacts. Target groups of EnDev are poor households, social institutions and micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises. EnDev promotes access to modern energy through grid connection, mini-grids and off-grid technologies and products, including improved cookstoves in more than 20 country projects in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
