Job Specification

For appointment to this grade, an officer must have:

  1. Bachelors degree in Veterinary Medicine/ Livestock production/Animal science or relevant qualifications from a recognized institution;
  2. Masters degree in Animal Breeding or its equivalent;
  3. Eight (8) years’ work experience and three (3) years in a supervisory role;
  4. Management course lasting not less than four (4) weeks;
  5. Registered by the relevant professional body;/Member of a relevant body;
  6. Have shown ability and demonstrated merit as reflected in work performance and results;
  7. Proficiency in computer applications; and
  8. Fulfil the requirements of Chapter 6 of the constitution.


Responsibilities

  1. Advising Management on policies and strategies on breeding and livestock production technologies;
  2. Overseeing research into breeding technologies and livestock production technologies;
  3. Approving and submitting livestock production reports;
  4. Advising on analysis of livestock inputs and products samples;
  5. Overseeing the dissemination of livestock breeding, production and management of information;
  6. Advising on livestock improvement and multiplication;
  7. Ensuring collaboration with other officers in research in breeding and breeding technologies;
  8. Representing the organisation in the Genetic advisory committee (GAC);
  9. Advising management on all matters related to animal genetics and breeding;
  10. Ensuring maintenance of inventory of assets in a livestock production station/farm;
  11. Overseeing the formulation, development, implementation, monitoring and review of policies, laws and strategies in research in breeding and breeding technologies;
  12. Developing annual work plans and budget for breeding and breeding technologies; and administering performance management systems; and
  13. Coaching and mentoring of staff.
  14. Working closely with breeders on contract mating scheme and progeny testing.
