The EU Aid Volunteers is an initiative of the European Union. It brings together volunteers and organisations from different countries, providing practical support to humanitarian aid projects and contributing to strengthening the local capacity and resilience of disaster-affected communities. Participants in the EU Aid Volunteers initiative must be over 18 years of age and be a citizen of an EU Member State or long-term resident in the EU.

ActionAid Hellas (Greece), WEWORLD-GVC (Italy), Alianza por la Solidaridad (Spain) and Acción contra el Hambre (Spain) are international non-governmental organizations that have joined their expertise in the management of humanitarian action worldwide and now implement the “EU Aid Volunteers supporting and complementing Humanitarian Aid in Middle East, Africa, Asia and Southern and Central America” project.

The project’s aim is to improve the response and the resilience capacities of the most vulnerable local communities through needs-based humanitarian aid (HA) in the Middle East, Asia, Southern and Central America and Africa with the deployment of 58 EU Aid Volunteers and 4 online volunteers. The volunteers will be deployed in 34 hosting organizations in 22 third countries: Tunisia, Palestine, Lebanon, Burkina Faso, Mozambique, Peru, Guatemala, Bolivia, Brazil, Cambodia, Niger, Mali, Benin, Kenya, Nepal, India, Senegal, Mauritania, Georgia, Philippines, Colombia, Myanmar.

For this vacancy, the volunteer will be hosted/based at ActionAid International Kenya field office in Isiolo Local Relief Programme (ActionAid’s Programmes Supporting Local Communities) supporting the LRP Coordinator Isiolo county in the eastern province of Kenya. It is a water-stressed area due to its semi-arid nature with very few permanent rivers in the area. The area frequently experiences food shortages as a result of drought. AAIK and its partners work on advancing women rights, livelihoods and natural resource management, humanitarian and resilience building as well as accountability.


Required competences

  • At least Master’s degree in Disaster Management, Conflict Resolution, Law, Humanitarian Studies, or fields relevant to Vulnerability and Adaptation Assessment.
  • At least 3 years of professional experience in a similar role.

Desirable humanitarian/development project cycle management knowledge.

General

The Risk, vulnerability assessment, mapping, fragility and conflicts EUAID Volunteer will be responsible for providing support and knowledge to the Programme Manager and Programme Coordinator - Down2Earth and SPA projects in Isiolo county in the Eastern province of Kenya (and as may be required, the LRP Coordinator in Kamuthe LRP) in strengthening knowledge and capacity of ActionAid local partners particularly the women networks and agro-pastoralist.

The tasks include:

Tasks:

• Identify issues, needs, data regarding climate change risks and vulnerabilities, the prevailing climate change hazards, their associated impacts on key ASAL economic sectors (including gender and vulnerable groups).

• Conduct risk and vulnerability assessment; mapping of fragile and conflict contexts in Isiolo and Kamuthe LRPs including the key economic sectors in the regions.

• Support the development, implementation and validation of risk and vulnerability assessments (and tools) within the LRP.

• Develop and maintain a database of relevant stakeholders contributing to the analysis and resolution of systemic issues identified.

• Act as a focal point for queries, consultations and requests from other components related to risk and vulnerability assessments as well as mapping of fragile contexts and conflicts.

• Assess current coping mechanisms and overall adaptive capacity of ASAL communities and their extent of effectiveness to develop a vulnerability profile of the communities

• Support the Programme Manager and Programme Coordinator - Down2Earth and SPA projects in Isiolo (as may be required, the LRP Coordinator in Kamuthe LRP) and partners to propose adaptation/mitigation actions for the respective climate change hazards and develop a plan for the implementing the actions to manage the associated risks.
