DUTIES AND RESULT AREAS

The Netherlands Embassy in Kenya focusses on a number of sectors: 1) Logistics 2) Health Care 3) Agribusiness 4) Water and 5) Energy Transition, to improve trade

and investment. As a part of the trade and investment team you will support in the day to day tasks. This includes answering business queries, keeping databases up to date and being the team-lead on communication.

You will be the focal point on any business queries around the energy transition. Therefore it will be important to build a strong network in this sector to be able to support businesses in this sector, whilst also being able to connect the dots between development cooperation programmes and political developments. Furthermore, you will become the focal point for the Netherlands Business Hub in Kenya and you will be the team-lead for communication.

Within its trade and investment agenda, the Netherlands Embassy aims to support SDG8 through the creation of decent jobs, but also to support education institutes such as TVETs to be able to improve skills. To this end the Netherlands Embassy collaborates with Nuffic, CFYE and other partners to enhance skills amongst young people and create decent jobs.

You will become the main responsible within the Embassy to monitor these programmes and think strategically about how to incorporate them within the Embassy’s wider strategy.

Trade and Investment Activities

  • Handle trade and investment requests. Give support to NL and KE business to enhance trade.

  • Embassy focal point for business in the energy-transition sector.

  • Make sure the business database is up to date

  • Support organization of Netherlands Business Hub Kenya events

  • Management and monitoring of programmes on skills and ‘better jobs’

  • Develop new programmes on youth employment, entrepreneurship and monitor existing programmes.

  • Embassy focal point for Nuffic, Challenge Fund Youth Education (CFYE), Orange Corners and other programmes.

  • Advise the embassy-staff on how to integrate skills and job creation into existing programmes.

  • Liaise with relevant development partners on the creation of better jobs.

  • Coordinate with and assuring good functioning of the Netherlands Alumni Network in Kenya

  • Coordination of the Dutch Visitors program

Team-lead communication

  • Communication focal point for the team.

  • Work on NL visibility when working with Dutch businesses or projects.

  • Organize events to showcase NL

  • Maintain LinkedIn page

Description of result areas:

The embassy has a thorough understanding of possibilities for youth employment in Kenya, has easy access to relevant networks and is recognized as a creative partner to find solutions for inclusive business practices.

Have a broad network within the energy sector and connect the dots between development programmes, political developments and the business community.

Businesses are informed quickly and satisfactorily as to questions concerning trade and investment opportunities, especially in the energy sector.

Working Environment

The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Nairobi is besides Kenya, also accredited in Somalia and the Seychelles. The Ambassador is moreover Permanent Representative to UNEP and UN-Habitat. The Embassy is an organization that consists of 50 employees, including attachés from several ministries in the Netherlands. The embassy is working on areas like aid and trade, security, political, consular and general affairs.

Partnering for sustainable solutions is the motto of the Netherlands – Kenya relationship. Within this relationship a strong focus will be laid on strengthening economic relations and trade. Inclusiveness, sustainability and digitalization are central to this relationship to ensure that no one is left behind in Kenya. Development can only be maintained and succeed when stability and democracy are maintained and strengthened. Building upon those principles. The Netherlands Embassy in Kenya is currently developing its Strategic Plan for the period 2023 – 2027. Under the new strategic plan, a further strengthening of the involvement of the Netherlands’ private sector in agribusiness, logistics, energy and health care is foreseen. The senior officer economic affairs will be working in the Trade and Investment team that also consists of one expat and one Kenyan policy advisor.

Job Requirements

  • Knowledge and areas of experience:

  • At least a Bachelor’s Degree in the area of Business Administration, Economics, Development studies. A masters - degree would be preferable.

  • 3 years relevant work experience

  • Experience with project management, monitoring and evaluation

  • A strong network in the education and/or energy sector.

  • Experience in private sector development

  • Good knowledge of the English language, orally and written. Knowledge of Dutch would be an advantage.

  • Good computer skills

  • Good interpersonal skills; ability to interact with people of all levels and quickly build relevant networks.

  • Ability to work well within a multicultural setting
