THE ROLE

We are looking for a well-organized professional to drive the uptake of the LH’s work and good practices from the refugee response in general. A person who enjoys thinking out of the box, is dynamic and creative, with excellent management and interpersonal skills.

The Communications Manager will manage Learning Hub communication and dissemination activities, projects and processes, including development and implementation of a podcast series, continuing to develop the U-Learn website as a resource centre, expanding the consultant pool for comms profiles and managing the work of the consultants, and working with refugee response actors to develop reflection and learning pieces (such as blogs and case studies). S/he will support the functioning of the LH through support with visualisation of resources and event management. In addition, the Communications Manager will provide technical advice and support on communication activities across the U-Learn and Uthabiti consortia.

To be successful for this role you will bring/have the following:

  • A Least a Bachelor’s degree in communication, social sciences, marketing, journalism or any relevant field.
  • Minimum of five years of relevant experience in the communications field
  • International development or humanitarian sector experience
  • Excellent writing skills and ability to tailor products to audience.
  • Proven experience with developing and executing communication plans
  • Experience curating and collating on-line resources, producing content for social media, and organising events
  • Experience managing communications activities from start to finish: from conceptualisation and development of ToR, plans and timelines; managing budget and project consultants; development and quality assurance of outputs; and implementation of MEAL activities.
  • Ability to manage own time and plan and manage own activities with support from manager
  • A creative story-teller with highly developed management, interpersonal, networking and communication skills. Keen interest in develop innovative communications approaches
  • Ability to multi-task, set priorities, and maintain positive attitude, functions well in a dynamic and high paced environment.
  • Pro-active communication: asks for support when needed, identifies and communicates on risks and project delays.
  • Curiosity for innovation management concepts, innovative approaches and new technologies.
  • Ability to work well independently, as well as part of a team
  • Working experience with desktop publishing software such as Adobe Creative Suites (InDesign) and/or Publisher, Canva, experience developing Infographics
  • Knowledge of digital analytics and insights: analytics for Facebook and Google etc. HTML/CSS an advantage.
  • Experience with photography and videography editing software preferred
  • Solid project management experience, including but not limited to communications, KM or learning activities.
  • Tech-savy, has experience with online tools and programmes such as website development, online google forms, meeting scheduling software etc.
  • Prior experience and knowledgeable developing, managing and editing donor-ready communication materials.
  • Knowledge of USAID and FCDO branding and marking requirements.

Learning Hub communications (75%)

  • Support the organization of on-line and in person conveners, such as learning events, launches, field visits etc. across the LH portfolio (with support from event management consultants).
  • Lead on uptake of LH resources:
  • Ensure that the necessary resources are in place in house to assure smooth delivery of work.
  • Manage the U-Learn LH on-line presence and branding.
  • Manage communications service providers (such as videographers or photographers), from writing the ToR, to quality assurance, dissemination of finalized products and ensure compliant supply and finance processes.
  • Work with Save the Children supply chain and service providers to assure that the necessary outputs are of quality and materials are delivered on time (printers, event locations, etc)
  • Collect communications content (pictures, stories) and use it to develop strong communication products such as one pagers, invitations, blogs, visuals, newsletters, social media messages, etc.
  • Create and manage a picture bank with material related to the Ugandan refugee response by liaising with, and collecting pictures from consortium members, and by taking or commissioning photographs.
  • Build and maintain a network of Ugandan communications personnel, journalists, academics and on-line personalities to increase collaboration and build allies that can be engaged on refugee response learning, and support dissemination of LH resources.
  • Lead on MEAL for comms activities (collect feedback data from events, report on reach etc) and through actively collecting feedback from strategic partners.
  • Support budget management for comms activities, including printing, comms consultant pool activities, website and online accounts, and comms content collection activities.

U-Learn and Uthabiti communications work (25%)

  • Manage the consortia’s internal communication through the monthly bulletin, developing internal materials that explain and translate the consortiums work to staff.
  • Lead on communication with RIL and Save the Children communications colleagues and support internal communication with the wider staff by identifying approaches or moments to share on U-Learn and Uthabiti work internally and externally by contributing to SCI and RIL communication channels.
  • Create detailed understanding on donor brand guidelines (FCDO and USAID) and assure these are respected on final Uthabiti and U-Learn products.
  • Provide regular communications technical advice and support to U-Learn, Uthabiti and RIL, for example through communications training, development and sharing of templates, etc.
  • Support the U-Learn consortium with Maintaining and furthering the recognition of the U-Learn brand through the development of brand materials such as one pagers, infographics, pocket folders, notebooks, T-Shirts etc.
  • In collaboration with communications consultants, support the Uthabiti consortium with the development and production of Uthabiti communication materials such as booklets, one pagers, banners etc. and the management of consultants who support
