  • Discussing the valuable lessons we can learn from their leadership styles and achievements.

Who is a Gen Z?

Gen Z refers to individuals born between 1997 and 2012, I am talking about those between 25 years and 12 years.

Unlike the precedent generations, this generation era has shaken a lot of tables. Individuals who fall in this generation refuse to settle with the saying “This is how things are done”, they prefer, “How can we make this easier to serve our purpose?” Does this mean they like things easier or they are lazy? No, they are trying to save time yet accomplish so much.

Having grown up in an era dominated by rapid technological advancements, social media, and unprecedented access to information like the use of AI. They are digital natives who are comfortable with technology and use it as an integral part of their daily lives, whether to just live, make money, or even escape reality for a second.

Unlike previous generations, Gen Z is characterized by their diversity, social consciousness, and a strong desire for authenticity and meaningful connections. They prioritize experiences, are highly entrepreneurial, and possess a global outlook on how things are handled.

Misconceptions about Gen Z Professionals

Despite their many strengths, Gen Z professionals are often faced with several misconceptions and these include:

1. Lack of Loyalty: There is a common belief that Gen Z lacks loyalty to their employers. However, studies show that they seek job security and are loyal to companies that provide growth opportunities and align with their values. So, why would you want to stay in a place where your job does not feel secure? I do not think you would either, this right here is a misjudgement on Gen Z.

2. Overly Dependent on Technology: While Gen Z is highly proficient with technology, this does not mean they are incapable of functioning without it. They leverage technology to enhance productivity and innovation. In this day and era where technology is freely available, why would you not use it to make your life easier? Instead of pinning this generation down, it's high time we embrace that technology is not against us, but for us.

3. Impatient and Entitled: Gen Z’s desire for rapid career progression is often mistaken for impatience or entitlement. In reality, they are driven and ambitious, seeking opportunities to make meaningful contributions. And I think they should, the world is evolving fast, why would you want to stay behind?

4. No Interpersonal Skills: Being digital natives, Gen Z is sometimes perceived as lacking in face-to-face communication skills. However, they value collaboration and are adept at both virtual and in-person interactions.

5. Unwilling to Work Hard: Gen Z is often unfairly labelled as lazy. On the contrary, they are hardworking and motivated, particularly when they find their work purposeful and engaging. This generation does not want to invest time where the returns on investment won't add up.
