Description
Main duties:
  • Organise and carryout routine inspection, maintenance, servicing, and repair of all stand-by and operational generators and to ensure they are always operational. Planning ahead and setting realistic targets.
  • Organise and carryout routine inspection, maintenance, servicing and repair of compressor plant, ventilation plant, roller shutter doors and lifting equipment.
  • Able to diagnose faults, order spares and completes plant equipment logbooks for all mechanical equipment.
  • Take decisions at the right time, within the limits of your own authority. You identify the main parts of, and solutions to, a problem.
  • Have a good working knowledge of repair procedures and relevant legal requirements & standards.
  • Able to identify, make safe and isolate faulty or dangerous installations and equipment using appropriate procedures in compliance with JSP 375, Vol 3 and organise the repair of the facility.
  • Maintain a working knowledge and understanding of the Petroleum and Mechanical Systems Safety Rule Book as required by current JSP 375, Vol 3.
  • Maintain a working knowledge and understanding of Confined Spaces JSP 375 Vol 3 Ch 6 and remain in date with breathing apparatus use and remain medically fit.
  • Comply with the Safe Systems of Work under JSP 375, Vol 3 and act as Person in Charge for Petroleum and Mechanical Systems.
  • Able to supervise and manage labourers and junior tradesmen under their charge. Monitor people’s progress and provide encouragement and constructive feedback without apportioning blame.
  • Complete and pass a 2 yearly First Aid and annual Fire training courses.
  • Respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis; identifies and communicates needed repairs; directs repairs, may participate in making repairs, transporting materials and equipment and other duties as directed.
  • Carry out any other duties commensurate with the trade/grade as directed by the MLM.


Competences/qualifications/experience:
  1. Essential:
    • Minimum of Trade Test 1 in Electrical, with three years working experience in generator repairs, troubleshooting, servicing and general maintenance.

    • Kenya certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE)

    • Methods and techniques of installation and maintenance of engines, compressors, generators, and other mechanical equipment.

    • Methods and techniques of maintenance, inspection, and emergency repair programs.

    • Troubleshoot problems and resolve non-routine maintenance and repair issues.

    • Motorised and hand tools and equipment used in assigned work area.

    • Understand occupational hazards and standard safety practices and procedures.

    • Heavy equipment operation techniques.

    • Understand relevant policies, functions and responsibilities, operations, and objectives of the Organisation.

  2. Desirable:

    • Hold Valid Kenya Driving license (Class B, C & C1).

    • Training or competence in electronic control module programming for generators, particularly FG Wilson PowerWizard, Deepsea and Easygen Software.

    • Interpret, apply, explain, develop and implement standards, policies, regulations and procedures.

    • Be aware of occupational hazards and utilise standard safety practices.

    • Ability to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.

    • Prepare and present technical reports following equipment failures and remediation plans.

    • Understand the principles and practices of supervision and employee development.

    • Understanding of pertinent UK, National and local laws, codes and regulations including BS 7671, IET Wiring Regulations.

    • Pertinent UK, National and local laws, codes and regulations depending on work area.

    • Applicable rules and standards including BATUK standing orders.

  • Training Requirements:
    • Structure and Function of the British Army, Defence Estates and BATUK.
    • Health and Safety at Work.
    • COSHH awareness.
    • Manual Handling.
    • First Aid & Fire Awareness.
    • Equipment Care including Use and Maintenance.
    • MOD Safety Rules & Procedures particularly JSP 375, Vol 3.
    • BS 7671, IET Wiring Regulations + Amendment 3.
    • Working at Height, Confined Spaces, Petroleum, Mechanical Systems, and Asbestos training.
