BACKGROUND:

Living Goods (LG) is an international NGO headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, with operations in Kenya, Uganda, and Burkina Faso.

In Uganda, Living Goods in partnership with MOH and the District Local Government has been implementing community health programs in 19 districts since 2009. The core implementation activities include Integrated Community Case Management (ICCM) of common childhood illnesses, Nutrition Assessment, Family Planning Education, provision of some selected methods, and Immunization demand generation. These services are offered through the village health teams (VHTs) to children under five and women of reproductive age.

Scope of work:

Living Goods Uganda has an internal essential medicines procurement and distribution mechanism to support community health in the districts of support. The Organization is looking to hire a supervising pharmacist on a retainer basis to support the pharmaceuticals portfolio at the organization. He/She will work closely with the Senior Health Advisor and the Procurement manager.

He/She will work closely with the Senior Health Advisor and the Procurement manager.


Support to Living Goods Uganda pharmaceuticals portfolio
  • Provide leadership and be the main resource for LGU on all pharmaceutical matters. Provide pharmaceutical license for coverage of LGU licensing requirements at the national level.
  • Responsible for designing and supporting the implementation of relevant policies and processes, and for resolution of issues/challenges of a pharmaceutical nature at both national and branch levels. Ensure any compliance issues are addressed pro-actively or resolved timely.
  • Ensure all LGU premises/branches and warehouses comply with National Drug Authority licensing requirements including management of the registration process with the NDA inclusive of annual renewals of premises.
  • Provide technical support and training in dispensing, handling, and management of drugs and pharmaceuticals to LG staff.
  • Support Branch Managers with initial inspections of new LG branches/drug storage premises including inspection by NDA officials.
  • Conduct quarterly support supervision visits to field teams and inspection of medicine storage at the branches.
  • Monitor and address unusual consumption patterns of essential medicines with field staff, QC team, senior leadership, and others as necessary.
  • Contribute to the evolution of and manage LG Uganda’s health waste management policy.

Provide technical support to the procurement and quality control process for pharmaceutical products

  • Procurement

  • Provide expert advice in the selection of pharmaceutical products that foster LG’s goals.

  • Participate as an active member of procurement committees for purchases of medicines and other pharmaceutical products

Supplier selection

  • Participate in the selection of pharmaceutical products suppliers and conduct due diligence to ensure LG sources medicines from reputable suppliers with current government registration

Quality control

  • Conduct regular visits to Living Goods’ pharmaceutical and medical devices suppliers to confirm the suitability of products and suppliers’ registration with government authority. 

  • Responsible for the implementation of Living Goods’ Medicines Testing Procedures. 

  • Responsible for Pharmacovigilance monitoring and reporting.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • A degree in Pharmacy with at least a minimum of three (3) years working in a similar field.
  • Current practicing license.
  • Registration with relevant professional bodies.

Duration of contract:

  • The contract will be on a retainer basis, initially spanning a twelve (12) months period with a high possibility of renewal and extension.
  • Successful individuals will be required to offer support on a need basis in addition to dedicating time on a monthly and quarterly basis.
