Making the decision to take a new job can be a stressful experience but can also provide you with great rewards as you work toward career goals. Before you sign that offer letter, you need to make sure a prospective employer is the right fit for you. Here are five key tips to follow as you go about your job search.

1. Does the company promote diversity?

During the interview process, don’t be afraid to ask about the ways in which your prospective employer promotes diversity. If the company representative doesn’t know how to answer this question, there is a problem. Diversity in the workplace can improve creativity and promote innovation, and a company that promotes diversity actively enhances its business potential.

2. Will you fit in with other team members?

Take some time to interact with other employees before you agree to take a job. Picture how well you will be able to fit in with the team. On average we spend one-third of our life at work - it stands to reason that you’re going to want to spend your workday with people you actually enjoy being around.

3. Will you fit in with the company culture?

Cultural fit should be one of your top priorities as you go about your job search. Try to assess exactly how well you’d fit in with the company. Does the company have a relaxed vibe, or are they strictly business? Do they have celebrations, such as work anniversary parties or celebrations for hitting milestones? Companies with these types of gatherings foster a positive work environment and make each employee feel as if they belong to the team.

4. Does the company offer advancement or growth opportunities?

No one wants to be stuck in a dead-end job so be sure to ask any organization about opportunities for growth. It is usually a good sign when a company promotes from within so look for a company that has room for growth. If you already know that you would like to progress your career with a specific company, be sure to ask about the ways in which the company promotes professional development. No matter what stage you are in your career, it is important to always be learning.

5. Does the company offer stability?

While exploring prospective employers, be sure to ask about company history and future goals. A company with poor performance history and lack of strategic vision may be one you wish to avoid. At bare minimum, a company needs to provide you with a steady paycheck. Beyond this, the company should have a history of success which will give you a feeling of job security. All businesses have their ups and downs, but you should pay attention to a company’s record of stability so that you have a strong foundation to succeed.

Whether you’re searching for your first job or you’re making a career change, it’s important to find employment that’s well-suited for you. By following these tips, you’ll put yourself on the path to success and find the perfect opportunity to further your career.
