Traditional in-person networking events aren’t as common as they used to be - how people meet and network has changed. Building a digital professional network may seem easy at first. The truth is, you need to put in as much effort as you would if it were in-person. By reading this article, you will get to know the tips needed to network like a pro.

1. Create an online profile

You need to have a web page. It needs to be a digital space where you save your portfolio. There are a variety of options to choose from, one being WordPress.com. Social media tools can also play a part in getting you the right network. For example, Instagram offers the option of creating a business account where you can share photos or videos of what you do. It could be things like catering services, beauty care, fashion or photography. Your online profile promotes your brand and connects you with people who have similar interests.

2. Realistic connection

Randomly popping or sliding into someone’s inbox out of nowhere most of the time triggers a negative response. First, you need to look into shared interests that you both have. It could be you both have passions on certain causes or mutual connections through someone. Finding the common ground is the basis you can use to work on building that connection and reaching out. Keep in mind it needs to be a two way relationship. So you also need to bring something to the table.

3. Stay connected

Since in-person networking has slowly been replaced with the use of virtual networking, keeping in touch with other people in your field is important. Don’t start engaging with your network then go silent for months or even years. The essence of networking is maintaining a long term relationship that will boost you professionally. Do a follow up upon any information that you shared or reply to responses from people in your network.

4. Take your time

Having a dream network won’t just happen overnight. Building something that lasts is an ongoing process that takes time. The amount of time it takes depends on your commitment in growing your network. Stay positive and keep reaching out to more connections. All the best!
