Description

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Horticulture, Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Crop Science), Bachelor of science in Agribusiness or related field from a recognized institution.
  • At least three (3) years of experience in horticulture production, agronomy, agricultural extension, farmer capacity building, or climate-smart agriculture programming in Uganda.
  • Preferred experience working within horticulture value chains including vegetables, fruits, and market-oriented production systems.
  • Strong knowledge and practical experience in horticulture production, GAP, CSA, food safety, post-harvest handling, pest and disease management, and farmer extension approaches.
  • Experience working with Farmer Organizations (FOs), smallholder farmers, implementing partners, private sector actors, and local government extension systems.
Responsibilities
  • Coordinate implementation of climate-smart horticulture production and technical advisory activities within the assigned region in line with GROWTH work plans and seasonal priorities.
  • Facilitate farmer training and capacity building on GAP, CSA, food safety, post-harvest handling, safe use and handling of agro-chemicals, produce quality management, grading, market standards compliance, Farming as a Business (FaaB), and farm record keeping.
  • Support farmer groups and value chain actors in preparation for compliance with market, food safety, and certification requirements where applicable.
  • Coordinate establishment, supervision, and monitoring of climate-smart demonstration plots, farmer learning sites, field days, technology showcases, exposure visits, and other farmer learning activities to strengthen farmer productivity and adoption of improved practices.
  • Promote and support scaling of proven and climate-smart horticulture technologies and practices to improve productivity, strengthen resilience, reduce post-harvest losses, improve produce quality, lower production costs, and promote efficient and safe use of agricultural inputs.
  • Support implementation of climate-resilient production practices including soil health management, water management, irrigation technologies, integrated pest management, and sustainable production systems.
  • Support profiling, engagement, and coordination of agro-input suppliers, nursery operators, irrigation and soil testing service providers, and other ecosystem actors to strengthen farmer access to quality inputs, technologies, and technical services.
  • Support Farmer Organizations (FOs) and farmer groups in input demand aggregation, seasonal production planning, market-oriented production, collective procurement, and establishment of decentralized input access and extension support systems.
  • Facilitate establishment and strengthening of community-based nurseries, seedling multiplication systems, lead farmer and farmer champion structures, and decentralized extension systems to support peer learning, local seedling access, technology adoption, and farmer technical support.
  • Conduct routine crop monitoring, field diagnostics, pest and disease surveillance, technical advisory visits, and follow-up support to farmers and demonstration sites to ensure quality implementation and farmer compliance with recommended agronomic and food safety practices.
  • Support collection of baseline and routine field data, monitoring of farmer adoption and productivity indicators, validation of implementation progress, and coordination with the MEL team to measure outcomes and track progress against agreed project indicators and targets.
