Waiting for the perfect job advert can take forever. Why not shoot your shot at companies you are interested in by applying for unadvertised jobs? It can be nerve-shattering to gather yourself and send unsolicited job applications, but you have nothing to lose. Besides, stepping out of your comfort zone might be a good sign of being a go-getter.

Here is how to make the email subject line

1. Use the reference’s name

“Referred by JohnSmith- Miles Burrow”

If you have been referred by someone in your network make it the subject line for your email. Having mutual contact with the recruiter increases the chances of your email being opened.

What if you do not have a common reference? Use their social profiles to get to them.

For example; “Your LinkedIn profile compels me to join your team”.

You might be wondering whether stalking is good or bad, but for the right reasons, it is never a bad idea. Stalking your next potential employer is a direct bypass to knowing what they might desire from an employee

2. Highlight the preferred position

“Your next Social Media Manager- Sandra Lews”

If you do not want your recruiter to second guess about opening a new email that has popped up in their inbox, communicate the reason clearly in the subject line. But let it be catchy. You might be wondering if I put the position in the subject line, won’t it be too direct? No, it won't. Save your recruiter time by getting straight to the point.

3. Let your skill introduce you

In this day and era, recruiters are big on skills. What do you have to offer? What makes you different from other job seekers? Your skills. Depending on what company you are applying to, use your skill to grab the recruiter's attention when applying for an unadvertised job. This way, you might hit the jackpot with the right skills and the recruiter will be compelled to open your email.

4. Show off your experience

“10 years in Sales and Marketing- Wentworth Miller”

We asked an HR Manager what she thought about this subject line, and this is what she said.

“One thing I find irresistible as a recruiter is experience. Candidates with experience in any given field save us a lot of work and time. They blend in easily and quickly improving the process. If your email immediately communicates your experience, I want to know more about you. I would definitely open it.” Joanna-HR Manager.”

5. Achievement-based subject line

“Award-winning Human Resources Specialist- Debbie Hughes”

Is there anything more convincing than this subject line? Absolutely not. Marketers have used this as a sales strategy, you often see products labelled, No.1 people’s choice awards, best-selling novels, and most-rated articles. Such phrases will get the end consumer’s attention. When you use this when applying for an unadvertised job, the recruiter will definitely open your email.

Bonus tips:

Do not be afraid to get personal.

You can choose to address the recipient by their name, but respectfully. People tend to feel special when addressed by their names and also would assume you do know them. For a cold email, addressing someone with Sir/Madam could be too serious. Calm down that tone by using their names - first names are much better.

Be brief

Your subject line has already introduced you. Let the email body be as simple as possible. Do not share your life story here.

Think ahead of time

When you have the recruiter’s attention, do not wait for them to ask for your academic details. Attach all your necessary documents. This saves the recruiter from wondering if you are the best fit.

Do your research

Imagine applying for an unadvertised job and quoting the wrong position in the email, it’s embarrassing. To avoid this, do the necessary research about the company. Ensure to send the email to the right contact person. The job search can really be a dreadful experience, but when you package yourself into a must-have product, you are likely to get a job offer.

Did you get an interview offer, here is what you need to know before your interview.
