The Internship which is a movie that premiered in 2013 stars with two salesmen downsized out of jobs. The rollercoaster journey they go through lands them as interns in Google. In the end, it shows how an internship with the right company is key in finding your career path. Many graduates looking for a job hit a wall when it comes to the work experience required. The whole reason you’re looking for a job is to gain experience, right? Well, this is where internships come in.

Before you jump right into searching for one you need to ask yourself some key questions; where do you want to intern? What skills would you want to learn that could help you build your career? Do you want a part time or full-time internship? Answering these questions is important in building your career. For more on career planning you can click here. Once that is done, you can begin and here’s how:

Start early

Someone once said that procrastination is like a credit card; it’s a lot of fun until you get the bill. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Don’t fall victim to thinking that you have all the time in the world to apply. The time is now. Most companies have a specific time as to when they recruit or offer internship. Check their calendar and start applying as soon as possible.

Ask & research

Trying to find the right internship alone can be frustrating, so why not reach out and get all the help you need. Ask around and let people know you’re actively looking for an internship. Start with the ones you know like friends or family. If you are a student you can use your school website and career office as your source of information on internships being offered. If you are a graduate who is actively searching, sign up on Fuzu.com select your preferred profession and subscribe to receive alerts on companies that are hiring.

Contact directly

If you have a list of companies that interests you and offer internship programs, reach out to them. In the case that some don’t, you could email a letter of interest and attach your CV. Who knows? They might consider creating a position and hire you. You never know till you try.

Don’t give up

No matter how long and hard it seems, don’t stop. Nothing worth having ever comes easy. It’s all part of the growth process. Sooner than you think, that call or email will come. Be patient and have a positive outlook. The best is yet to come.
