Problem Statement:

Owning a water tank and accessing clean water is life-changing for rural households in Africa. As of October 2022, about 226 million people in Eastern and Southern Africa did not have access to basic water services, and 381 million people lacked access to basic sanitation services. The situation is worse in rural areas than in cities. Addressing people’s need for water and sanitation is key to improving their lives and boosting economic growth.

A Kenyan Micro Finance Institution (MFI) has recently launched a water tank loan product focusing on rural Kenya. Through this product, the bank hopes to support rural families’ efforts towards mitigating the effects of climate change by harvesting rainwater for domestic use. Apart from their productive use, and the savings it offers households, water tanks play a significant role in climate resilience and adaptability. Additionally, the water tank enables the family to access clean water and therefore avoid water borne diseases and save on related medical expenses.

The micro finance bank plans to finance water tanks acquisition for 15,000 families in 2024. This number will be scaled up in subsequent years. The bank is facing challenges in acquisition and distribution of the tanks and needs an expert to review its current arrangements related to this loan facility and recommend a more efficient and effective model.

F2F A2F is recruiting a U.S. citizen or permanent resident volunteer expert to provide support to MFI in Kenya to review the current water tank loan model with a special focus on acquisition and distribution and propose changes that can enhance efficiency. Through this support, the IESC F2F A2F Program will help the micro finance bank improve the water tank loan product making it more competitive in the market and appealing to more customers throughout Kenya. A more efficient and effective acquisition and distribution model will make the water tank financing product more competitive in the market and appealing to more customers. Ultimately, through this support, the IESC F2F A2F Program will help enhance the uptake of the water tanks and contribute towards making families and communities more resilient to climate change related shocks.

Objectives of the Assignment:

1. Review the current water tank loan model and compare it with other existing models in the market.

2. Develop a more efficient and effective acquisition, distribution and pricing model for the water tanks

Deliverables:

1. Completed water tank acquisition, distribution and pricing model

2. Trip report

3. PowerPoint presentation to be delivered to the host, F2F A2F team, and USAID/Kenya
