The Theatre Unit Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the operating theatre, ensuring efficient surgical services, high-quality patient care, and adherence to hospital policies and healthcare regulations. This role involves managing surgical teams, coordinating procedures, ensuring patient safety, and optimizing resource utilization within the theatre department.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) or equivalent;
- Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support training is an added advantage.
- Have sound clinical knowledge base and excellent time management skills.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of clinical nursing experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership in Theatre operations.
- Proficiency in theatre procedures, infection control, and sterilization techniques.
- Ability to work under pressure in high-stress surgical environments.
- Effective communication and good inter-personal skills
- Strong organizational and co-ordination skills
- Positive, professional leader focused on ensuring quality patient care and a motivated nursing staff
- Strong commitment to developing the next generation of nursing talent & teamwork
- Confidence, enthusiasm and a friendly approach to work.
Responsibilities
1. Clinical & Patient Care Performance
- Quality of Surgical Nursing Care – Ensuring patients receive safe, high-quality, and evidence-based perioperative care.
- Infection Control & Sterility Compliance – Adherence to infection control protocols, including proper sterilization of instruments and aseptic techniques.
- Patient Safety & Incident Management – Reduction of surgical complications, medication errors, and patient safety incidents.
- Postoperative Recovery Outcomes – Monitoring and improving patient recovery and minimizing postoperative complications.
2. Operational & Efficiency Indicators
- Theatre Utilization & Turnaround Time – Efficiency in scheduling surgeries, minimizing delays, and optimizing operating room use.
- Adherence to Surgery Schedules – Percentage of surgeries starting and ending on time without avoidable delays.
- Emergency Readiness & Response Time – The ability to mobilize teams and resources for emergency and trauma cases.
- Equipment & Resource Availability – Ensuring theatre supplies, medications, and equipment are readily available and well-maintained.
3. Staff Management & LeadershipStaff Competency & Training Compliance – Percentage of theatre nurses and staff who have completed required training and certifications.
- Team Morale & Retention – Staff engagement, satisfaction, and retention rates within the operating theatre.
- Performance & Adherence to Protocols – Ensuring nursing staff follow established perioperative procedures and best practices.
- Effective Delegation & Supervision – Monitoring and evaluating team performance, ensuring accountability.
4. Compliance & Risk Management
- Regulatory Compliance & Accreditation – Adherence to national health regulations and accreditation standards.
- Surgical Checklist Compliance – Consistent use of WHO Surgical Safety Checklists and other patient safety tools.
- Incident & Error Reporting – Ensuring proper reporting, documentation, and corrective action for any adverse events.
- Occupational Health & Safety Compliance – Ensuring the theatre environment is safe for both staff and patients.
5. Communication & Coordination
- Interdisciplinary Team Collaboration – Effective coordination with surgeons, anesthetists, and allied health professionals.
- Patient & Family Communication – Ensuring preoperative and postoperative information is communicated clearly.
- Handover & Documentation Accuracy – Maintaining clear and accurate patient records, surgical logs, and handovers.
6. Budget & Resource Management
- Cost-Effectiveness in Theatre Operations – Managing budgets effectively while maintaining quality care.
- Minimization of Waste & Resource Optimization – Reducing unnecessary use of surgical supplies and optimizing inventory management.
- Equipment Maintenance & Procurement Efficiency – Ensuring timely servicing and replacement of surgical equipment.
7. Continuous Improvement & Innovation
- Implementation of Best Practices & New Techniques – Keeping the theatre team updated on emerging surgical procedures and nursing innovations.
- Process Improvement Initiatives – Identifying and implementing strategies to enhance efficiency and patient outcomes.
