Background


GIZ has been in operation in Kenya since 1975 as commissioned by the Kenyan government.  The current thematic areas for the ministry for economic cooperation and development are in
the areas of agriculture, food security and Sustainable Economic Development.  In addition to the already mentioned focus areas, there are also projects in the sectors of good governance, energy and migration. Other activities GIZ also engages in are in the sectors of economy and sport for development.  Furthermore, GIZ using the Civil Peace Service, supports dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution of societal conflicts in Kenya.

 

GIZ also implements on behalf of the federal ministry for environment, nature conservation and nuclear safety, projects in the fields of environment and climate. The goal of GIZ is to support the capacity development of people, organisations and institutional structures in the partner countries so as to enable them better their living conditions through their own efforts. Based on the government agreement, GIZ implements its commission in close cooperation with the civil society.

A.    Responsibilities


The Accountant is responsible for following tasks:

 

  • Ensuring that the provided services within the section are done correctly and on a timely basis according to GIZ Financial and Accounting Guidelines and are in line with the SLA.
  • Carrying out Internal controls for Project and programmes in accordance with P + R
    and ensuring compliance.

 

In this context, the Accountant fulfils the following tasks:

1.      Core scope of tasks


  • Carries out accounting procedures using WINPACCS accounting software and prepares
    monthly journals and bank reconciliation statements.
  • Checks the vouchers and receipts submitted by the projects/programmes for completeness and allocation to cost units and categories and correct these where necessary.
  • Reports all problems with financial administration and compliance without delay.
  • Is responsible for filing documents and reports in accordance with GIZ rules.
  • Training Project Cashiers and Administrators on GIZ Financial and Accounting
    guidelines.
  • To carry out internal controls for GIZ Projects and Programmes through error sheets and site audit.
  • Ensure all reports are done on time, signed, submitted to the respective units and properly filed.
  • Ensure End Month Procedure for Office Journal are completed by 7th of the following month and for Project journals by 15th of the following month.
  • Follow-up of Office Receivables/Liabilities-USD/EURO Journals

 


2.      Additional tasks

 

  • Checks the vouchers and receipts submitted by the Cashiers for completeness and
    allocation to cost units.
  • Any other duties as may be assigned by Head of Department.

 


C.    Required qualifications, competences and experience


Qualifications


  • BA in Accounting or comparable qualification.

  • CPA K, ACCA or equivalent qualification.

 

Professional experience


  • At least 3 years of professional working experience in a similar position

 

Other knowledge, additional competences


  • Experience with IT-based accounting programs
  • Good working knowledge of modern telecommunication systems
  • Good interpersonal communication skills
  • Good English command. German knowledge is an added advantage
