Everyone has career aspirations that they want to achieve. This could be having a do over of what you didn’t get this year, for example, looking for a new job or deciding to make a career change. It is easy to make a list of your career resolutions but the hard part comes in making it a reality.

In this two-part series, we will look at the career resolutions to make in 2021 (part 1) and how to keep your career resolutions (part 2). These are some tips to help you keep your 2021 career resolutions:

Invest in yourself

Investing in your career or businesses is good, but you are the greatest investment. In the words of Jim Rohn, “Success is something you attract by the person you become.” This means that the person you are now and the person you want to become is based on how well you invest in yourself. A good example is by learning new skills/courses, increasing your professional network and so on. Be the first to invest in yourself before trying to convince others.

Be realistic & consistent

Just because you made a resolution that makes sense doesn’t mean it is likely to happen. Most career resolutions fail because they are vague and too overstated. In order to accomplish your resolutions then you need to be realistic in your goals. For example, hoping to increase your network or make a career change within a month and be an overnight success. That’s unlikely to happen. Did you know it takes more than two months just for a new habit to become part of your personality? This just shows that your resolutions require consistency. What you do now and keep doing daily sets the pace on whether you will achieve your resolutions.

Keep it simple

Making a long list of resolutions doesn’t mean you will achieve it all at once. It is advisable that you keep it short and focus on the most important goals. Even before building a house you need to have a blueprint. The same applies to your career resolutions. Write down your top three to five resolutions. Then keep it simple by breaking them into small goals. For example, if you are planning to save and invest then start with a smaller amount that you can put aside monthly or weekly. You can look for a side hustle to earn extra income to save more. Doing the small things in a big way can make all the difference.
