The end of the year is here with us and it’s time to reflect and plan. Maybe it's the year you made employee of the year - unless your employer does not appreciate top talents. Point is, whether good or bad, we all have something to ponder upon and something to look forward to. Happy New Year in advance! That’s right—it’s time to break out the calendars and set some new year resolutions and plans for the new year.

And just like it has always been the custom, we strive to become better than we were for every new beginning. We make resolutions, which sometimes some of us do not work towards. Some of the reasons why some resolutions are not attained is because of:

  • The resolution is too vague and is not time-bound

  • It was created based on what someone else (or society) told you to change

  • You don’t have a realistic plan for achieving your resolution

These are some of the things you should consider when making your new year's resolutions:

  1. Have a specific resolution. For instance, if you want to change careers in 2022, then you have to be specific about it. Which career would you move to next, and by when.

  2. Your new year resolutions should be measurable, how can you track your progress throughout the year? What tools are available that can be used to reinforce your progress?

  3. Have attainable resolutions, this does not mean you should shy away from dreaming big. It is advisable to start with baby steps even as you gear forward. For instance, it would be unrealistic to say that you want to save a million dollars by the end of the year. On the other hand, it is achievable to say that you will be saving 100 dollars monthly.

  4. Your resolution should be personal to you and not any other person. If you make resolutions out of anger, remorse, or sympathy, it won't last long.

  5. Your new year resolutions should be time-bound. The timeline for achieving it should be realistic.

The following are new year resolutions that you can achieve

1. Learn a new skill

In a recent article on 7 simple and practical ways to learn a new skill, we highlighted that learning a new skill is key to career reinvention. It breaks monotony at work by expanding your capabilities. In addition, learning new skills boosts your confidence at work and increases professional opportunities.

In addition, learning a new skill has benefits to your mental wellness. When your brain engages in a new skill, more neurons are stimulated. The more active your brain is, the less it is prone to aging. Learning a new skill also fuels self-confidence.

The more knowledge you acquire the more you become an interesting person.

2. Find a new job

3. Exercise more

We all know exercise is good for us, but it's easy to get lazy when it comes to actually do it. If you don't have time for a formal exercise routine, you can make time by adding some activity to your day. Whether it's making the trip up and down the stairs a little brisker or taking a walk during your lunch break, even small amounts of exercise can add up over time. This is a great New Year's resolution because it gives you the opportunity to work towards something achievable rather than setting big goals that might be too much to handle.

4. Drink more water

Drinking water keeps your body hydrated. Water helps eliminate waste products, including excess salt and harmful chemicals from your body. It also lubricates joints and cartilage in your body, which is essential for maintaining good health. Water can also help prevent weight gain caused by overeating or eating unhealthy foods. Water helps lose weight, as it fills up your stomach without adding calories or fat to your body. Drink at least 2 liters of water per day to stay hydrated.

Additional tip

Resolve to Eat more fruits and vegetables - Fruits and vegetables are rich in nutrients and vitamins. But sometimes, they also contain pesticides, which may harm your body. So it is better to eat organic fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are important components of a healthy diet. Eating five daily servings of fruits and vegetables can reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer and other diseases.

Conclusion

The key to achieving new year resolutions is to not give up on them – if you can just stick with them and go about your usual day-to-day activities, then you’re most of the way there. It helps if you record these goals in a journal, that way you can read what you wrote at the start of the year and you’ll be more likely to stay committed.
