  • A lot has changed in the job market over the past year including job interview processes and how we network.

  • This article highlights how best you can adapt and the tools you can leverage on.

2020 was a year characterized by drastic change and uncertainty. However, there’s no better time than the present to prepare for the opportunities that come with this new year. In this two-part series, we look into 2021: what changes to expect in the job market (part 1) and what you can do to stand out (part 2).

Here’s a look at the steps you need to take:

Be proactive

Now that meeting in person for interviews and career advice isn’t as common, you will have to improvise. Take daily actions to increase your visibility and stay connected within your professional circles. Remain confident as you focus on your own career journey and growth.

Digital footprint

Now more than ever before, your digital profile is essential in networking. Particularly on professional and social media platforms like Fuzu and LinkedIn. Ensure it is updated and revisit to add any new projects you’ve worked on. Portray a good reputation and be professional (see how to maintain a professional image online). Most recruiters are checking social media profiles of potential candidates.

Virtual supplies

Remote work is on the rise and interviews have become virtual. This means you need to be equipped with the right equipment such as a laptop with a webcam, quality headset and high-speed internet to avoid being cut off during interviews. Learn how to use video conferencing tools like Zoom, Google Meets among others.  To read more on tips for acing virtual job interviews, click here.

In the new working environment, you’ll need to take up the responsibility of your career growth. Initially, you would learn through observing what your work colleagues are doing in the office but now you’ll have to be more curious and do your own research. Many resources are now accessible online, so why not make the most of it? You can acquire more skills through virtual conferences, webinars, online training etc. This is something recruiters will look at and it shows how committed you are in building your career.

Be flexible

Have an open mind when it comes to the job search. Carefully think on the type of employment you are searching for. Don’t pass up temporary positions or internships which may be readily available. Use the opportunity to learn. You never know who is watching and maybe it could lead to something long term.

Don’t stress

Even though there are reports of high unemployment, it doesn’t mean companies aren’t hiring. Don’t give up. You’ve got what it takes. Soon enough you will get your dream job it is only a matter of time.
