Metallurgist I

Duties and Responsibilities

This is the entry and training grade for this cadre. An officer at this level will work under the guidance of a senior officer. Duties and responsibilities will include:-

• Ensuring metal components meet engineering specifications (tensile strength, hardness, toughness);
• Investigating root causes of metal failure, corrosion, or fatigue in machinery and infrastructure;
• Monitoring and improving extractive metallurgy processes (pyro metallurgy/ hydrometallurgy) and heat treatment procedures;
• Preparing detailed reports on experimental results, material properties, and recommendations for material selection; and
• Mentoring or supervising laboratory technicians and junior metallurgists.

For appointment to this grade, an officer must have

• A Bachelor's degree in Mining and Mineral Processing, Analytical Chemistry or Chemical Engineering from a university recognized in Kenya;
• Professional registration with a relevant engineering body (e.g., Engineers Registration Board); and
• Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) and metallurgical software, as well as data analysis.
