Job Title: Farm Manager
Reporting To: Directors
Department: Agriculture
Contract Type: Fixed-term
Contract Duration: 1 year, with probationary period that covers 2 seasons, renewable upon satisfactory harvest of season 2
Location: Bweyale, Kiryandongo District, Uganda
The farm operates approximately 1500 acres, focusing primarily on cereals and grains, with a core team of 15 permanent staff and 50–300 casual labourers, depending on the season.
The Farm Manager will provide overall leadership, management, and strategic oversight of agricultural operations. The role is responsible for ensuring efficient production, optimal use of resources, staff management, and achievement of farm productivity targets across two farming seasons annually.
Responsibilities
Strategic & Operational Management
Provide overall leadership and oversight of all farm operations across both planting and harvesting seasons
Plan, coordinate, and supervise crop production activities for cereals and grains across 500 acres
Ensure timely execution of seasonal farming activities in line with agronomic best practices
Develop and implement operational plans, budgets, and production schedules
People Management
Provide leadership and supervision to the Operations Manager and permanent staff
Ensure effective coordination of casual laborers through the Operations Manager
Promote discipline, productivity, teamwork, and compliance with farm policies and procedures
Identify staffing needs during peak seasons and support workforce planning
Financial & Resource Management
Oversee farm budgets, cost control, and efficient utilisation of inputs such as seeds, fertilisers, machinery, and labour
Monitor expenditures and ensure value for money across farm operations
Support reporting to Directors on farm performance, costs, and profitability
Compliance, Quality & Risk Management
Ensure compliance with agricultural regulations, safety standards, and environmental best practices
Implement measures to manage operational risks including weather variability, pests, and post-harvest losses
Ensure quality standards are maintained from planting through to harvesting and storage
Reporting & Stakeholder Engagement
Prepare and submit regular operational and performance reports to the Directors
Act as the key liaison between the Directors and farm operations
Provide timely updates on progress, challenges, and recommended interventions
Qualifications & Experience
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Agribusiness, Farm Management, or a related field (required)
A postgraduate qualification is an added advantage
Experience
Minimum of 7 years’ experience in an agricultural setting, preferably managing large-scale grain or cereal farms
Proven experience managing farm operations, seasonal labour, and production cycles
Demonstrated passion for agriculture and hands-on farm management
Skills & Competencies
Strong leadership and people management skills
Sound knowledge of grain and cereal crop production
Excellent planning, organisational, and problem-solving skills
Financial and operational management capability
Ability to work in a rural setting and manage seasonal operational pressures
Strong reporting and communication skills

Working conditions
This is a field-based role requiring presence on the farm during all key operational activities. The Farm Supervisor must be available to work according to seasonal demands, which may include early morning starts and work during harvest peaks. The role is based in Bweyale, Kiryandongo District, Uganda.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
Strategic & Operational Management
Design a season calendar and plan including each stage of production for season 1 submitted to Directors for approval by 23 February 2026. Should include 1. Crops to be produced (subsistence and commercial), 2. Inputs and quantities required, 3. Equipment requirements, 4. Recommended suppliers, 5. Target output per acre for each crop, 6. Monitoring plan highlighting task persons and their required deliverables
The calendar and plan should be broken down into weekly and daily activities
Provide daily reports to Directors and Compliance Manager on activities, highlighting risks, additional input requirements, any challenges or variation from scheduled plan, and support requirements
Design and implement an effective weed management strategy
Design and implement SOPs for machinery and manual labour implementation
People Management
Set and implement KPIs with clear deliverables for Field Manager, Junior Field Manager, and Field Supervisors
Financial & Resource Management
Budget to support season 1 calendar by 23 February 2026
Provide weekly reports on budget utilisations, projection revisions on outputs and profit
Reporting & Stakeholder Engagement
Ensure environmentally friendly disposal of all waste
Design in collaboration with Compliance Manager a system of verification of application of inputs, and ensure it is completed on a daily basis
Design and implement an early warning system for all production risks including weather variability, pests, and post-harvest losses
Target setting
Output per acre for soybean, onion, coffee and bananas, honey
