Qualifications

PhD in Bioinformatics or a closely related field, completed or near completion (conditional upon submission of thesis for examination);
Significant experience analysing metagenomics datasets with a track record of peer- reviewed publications as a first or contributing author;
Familiarity with Unix/Linux and High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems for large- scale data processing;
Strong programming skills, preferably in Python and R;
Extensive experience with bioinformatics workflow management tools such as Nextflow, version control systems such as Git, and containerisation technologies such as Docker;
Experience developing NGS data analysis pipelines and familiarity with data visualisation tools;
Experience developing GUIs for bioinformatics applications is an added advantage;
Demonstrated application of machine learning to viral genomics data, including first- author contribution on this topic.

Responsibilities

Analyse metagenomic sequencing datasets generated from a diverse range of sample types using reproducible and scalable bioinformatics pipelines;
Evaluate and integrate machine learning, large language models (LLMs) and AI-based methods into existing metagenomics analysis pipelines;
Contribute to the development of graphical user interfaces (GUIs) for the analysis and interpretation of metagenomics and PhiP-Seq datasets targeting scientists without specialist bioinformatics expertise;
Develop interactive dashboards and data visualisation tools to support interpretation of metagenomic sequencing results from environmental samples;
Contribute to manuscript preparation, conference presentations, grant applications and other research dissemination activities;
Provide bioinformatics support and training to research students and collaborating scientists; and,
Undertake any other project-related duties assigned by the Principal Investigator.
